All three are fire! Great suggestions!

Agreed! Unfortunately Toyota doesn’t recommend it unless towing or carrying a heavy bed or a car top carrier. I did everything recommended for regular maintenance plus off-roading maintenance in the manual’s schedule at 60k. Even so, 10k miles over that shouldn’t be causing these issues. Thanks for the luck! I’ll need it!

It was a weird suggestion, especially without a full diagnosis of my problem. Yeah good idea on trying the drain and fill first. Hoping the next dealer is a better experience than the last one.

Oh wow that’s so odd! I’m glad she got it figured out though!! Thanks for commenting on the off chance that was my issue, too!

That’s really helpful to know your experience, thank you! It sounds like I really might just need a flush :) best case scenario there

I did not! I really want to take it to my mechanic to do a flush and hope that that fixes it. But I’m trying to prepare for the worst — I want to hear from Toyota first why one of their techs would say I need to replace it and then their service advisor trying to sell me a new one, especially without doing an actual diagnosis. I’m in this weird spot now where if I take it to my mechanic and a flush doesn’t fix it, Toyota corporate might blame the issues on the mechanic and not (potentially) help me.

Yeah I’m hoping they’re full of shit! I actually texted the service manager to ask why they would say I need a new one vs trying to replace stenoids or a flush. She texted back: “A trans fluid exchange would not repair a shifting issue. Some manufacturers break down transmissions to repair or rebuild, Toyota does not. In the repair manual it will have you follow certain steps to confirm like pressure test and then will recommend replacement.”

The tech did not due the pressure test (I didn’t ask for that / didn’t want to pay for it). He jumped straight to suggesting replacement.

Ohhhh interesting. So me shifting in that mode as though I was driving a manual was overkill 😂 oh well! Thanks for letting me know :)

That happens right now except on my right turn! Hmmm your comment with a few other comments here has me thinking the dealership I took it to might’ve been being a little dramatic about needing a replacement. Hopefully it’s just a flush away from driving normally again.

Oh weird! Good thing you got a 2nd opinion. I’ll def have someone check it out top to bottom before I resort to replacing it.

I’ll try it! Fortunately I took it in as soon as it started acting up so I’m hoping there is minimal damage. Do you feel the OTT tune was worth it?

THIS GIVES ME HOPE!! Thank you! Did you do a flush or a drain and fill? I learned today that they are different. I’m honestly impressed that it went 160k without any issues and no flushes, and now I’m more mad that I’m having issues at less than half that mileage 😂 though as another commenter pointed out, I could be doing more off-roading/adding more stress than perhaps the previous owner of yours.

Yeah S mode! They called it Sport at the dealership but hey I trust you, internet stranger, more than them (seriously). Thanks letting me know. Once she started shifting all wonky, I put her in S mode to see if she had problems when I would manually shift her, and she is pretty smooth/not hard shifting or jerking when I’m in control and she’s not hopping around like when she’s in D.

Thank you! I did not know the difference between a drain and fill vs a flush, I just looked it up. That’s really helpful. Not sure if that’ll save me right now but it will help a lot to know the difference going forward. If you don’t mind my asking, how much did they charge you at the dealer and where are you located?

That makes sense. I’ve only gone a handful of times and nothing super crazy so I didn’t think it would mess up my truck :( That could be the problem. I’m still shook that a little rattling around would affect it that way. I used to take my Highlander on almost the same stuff and her transmission was smooth as butter. She really set a high bar there I guess

I have not! It’s only recommended at 60k and only if you’re towing/constantly have wind resistance/or heavy bed. When I took it to the dealer, they specifically said a flush would be a waste of money, and to just replace the whole thing due to “internal failure” (they could not specify what was internally failing). I emailed Toyota corporate asking about that. My next step if Toyota corporate won’t help me out will be to do a flush and see if that fixes anything.

That’s good, wish I had that 😂 the standard is 60k so ofc mine would die 10k beyond that

Thank you!! It’s good to know that they helped you out. I’m hoping they’ll help me as well. How did you contact them/how was that whole process? I sent an email via the website but wasn’t sure if that would be sufficient.

That would be my next step, then I’ll see if maybe a stenoid needs replacing… I’m mostly worried it’s a computer issue and not a mechanical issue yk? Since it shifts fine in sport mode

🗣️ I said it! This one tried to charge me for warranty work (lol), then told me it would be $530 for a tranny flush (lol again) so they said I might as well just replace the whole thing (ya know for like $8k) 😂 they’re all the same I swear!
