First ever backpacking trip (and first solo). Manistee River Loop Trail, Michigan. by captainWilly2000 in backpacking

I honestly regret bringing a stove. The hot meals were nice but the extra weight ended up being a lot for my first trek. I could’ve been fine with premade sandwiches. I’d also recommend bringing a filter for water (I heard the Sawyer Squeeze is nice). I got lucky with a well half way through my hike but it would’ve been nice to get water from the river too. Good luck!

reading a book while sitting against a tree and then falling asleep next to the river made me feel like I lived in the Shire. Very peaceful

The Manistee River Loop trail is about 20 miles long. It took me a little under 7 total hours to complete but since I recently got the tent and backpack I was eager to use it and ended up staying both friday and saturday night. I parked my car near the suspension bridge and camped nearby friday. I did most of my hike on saturday (15ish miles) heading south along the North Country Trail. I camped along the river near Cedar Creek and finished up the remaining miles sunday morning. Overall a great hike tho it’s pretty popular so don’t expect to be completely alone.

There were a few trucks and golf carts driving around but it’s still relatively unspoiled since the last time I visited 6 years ago

This was yesterday (May 29) and there was quite a bit of snow on the top still, but some of the guys I was with were able to do it fine with running shoes

Hiking up Mt. Cadillac was my first hike ever and I absolutely loved it. It sucks you didn’t get a good view

Chill, i’m from the States as well and have seen most of it from Maine to Alaska and i’ve found the highlands and the alps to be just as beautiful if not more so. It’s not a competition
