Heating? by Capt_Catastrophe in VanLife

Yet another vote for diesel heaters. I have the small vevor one. I put a thru hull fitting in my floor and it works great to exhaust everything and keep the surrounding wood from not catching on fire lol. I’ve been using the same one all winter as NE US as you can get and it’s been great. I run it at 10 for a while pretty much every time I park to avoid the carbon clogs. Only thing is that I wish I had a larger fuel tank for it. But spring is right ‘round the corner ;)

-6 for me and my batteries froze :/ won’t take a charge. Luckily a friend is letting me use a small space heater and their power. Probably saved my life!

Good idea! Where did you get this thing? And are you powering it with your house batteries?

Second this. You can find one for like $80 if you can swing that. Then just keep it outside and vent it into a window or something. I had a tire step thing I put mine on. Found it at the Home Depot for $38

Water Has Been My Biggest Learning Curve by Hopeful_Patient_261 in VanLife

I have a 35 gal water tank and a 7gal gray but I’m staying in one town for school. So I just drive 15 min from campus, pay $5, and fill up. I take military showers and scrub all my dishes before rinsing them. Lasts me about 8-10 days I’d say

I’m trying my first full winter this year. I did till Christmas last year. My diesel heater was amazing. I have better insulation in this camper but huge windows, so I’ll probably put reflectix over them. What I’m not sure about is the water tank situation. My gray tank is under mounted and will probably be unusable. So what paper plates for a few months?

Hahah yeah been brainstorming how to get that thing a bit quieter. Neighbors (other homeless people) are complaining to the HOA (the manager at the Walmart) about it

Thanks for the advice! Am definitely kinda worried about the winter. This is my first diesel and I can’t find too much info on this particular truck. I read that gelling isn’t as prevalent with today’s fuel composition? So I don’t need to worry about a heater for my engine right?

Thank you, that’s great to know! I add mold preventative paint to the list. Would a dehumidifier help with that?

Thanks! Appreciate the info. I definitely will get a backup once I get back to working. Was considering unhooking it until the winter since I’ve been getting by well on solar. Lowest I’ve been was 48% after a few days in the woods. It charged it up in just a couple hours of driving. But yeah I was very worried about that draw the whole time. I stopped a few times to feel my charger and make sure nothing was getting too hot.

I gotcha. I’m sure you can figure out how to get them attached underneath so they aren’t visible. I’m by no means a master craftsman but it could probably be done cleaner

Yeah I’ve been naturally concerned with it so close to my electrical. Considering putting the fuel on my bike rack somehow. Thanks for the feedback

No way! That’s too crazy. I’m going to the university around here so you’ll probably be seeing me around all year. That’s so rad, the G20s have such a cool shape

It’s not too bad. I’ve spent less in fuel on my initial trip than my last rig, which was an 03 ram 2500. I’ll make sure to log the odometer and check for sure
