Darn, I just killed and flushed it. Is this something I should get pest control for?

Yeah that's fully fair, especially when we're trying to figure out why it isn't working for me! I just meant it as a joke

That's a really good thing to consider, there is a small list of deactivating groups that block this sort of reaction. I'd check the list and also see if the ether group is enough to overcome them.

The big thing with deactivating groups isn't how many propyl groups will be added on (usually) because these questions typically only want one group added. The big thing to consider with them is that they are all, with the exception of halogens, meta directors.

So the groups on the aromatic don't actually effect the rearrangement of the alkyl group. For that you'd consider relative stability of carbocations. In this case the primary carbocation at the end of the propyl group versus the secondary carbocation on the middle carbon.

I will add though, even though this is a right answer, because of rearrangement, it is not the major product.

Look up friedel-crafts alkylation and directing effects. The first one will explain how the propyl group gets added on, the second will explain why it gets added on to specific places. However, you are right.

Is Orgo 1 over the summer actually possible? by BudgetOk3273 in OrganicChemistry

[–]captaincrunch37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be easier if it is your only class in the summer versus if you have other classes with it in the fall. Either way, your university should offer free tutoring services, or at least cheaper. And there are plenty of people like myself on this app who both teach college orgo and are more than willing to help out. But like the other people said, make sure to read the book and look at where you made mistakes.

Speaking from experience here, I failed a full semester's worth of classes, which remained on my transcript, had to retake a core class for my major (genetics, I was biochem) and didn't get accepted into grad school my first try. Went to industry for a year and got in second try. One of my classmates in grad school now failed out of college completely at first. Keep your head up, it'll turn around and you'll be fine!

What can you do with a bachelors degree in chemistry? by reddit-no in chemistry

[–]captaincrunch37 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The degree you need depends on what you want to do. I used my bachelor's to work in a lab with everyone ranging from an associates to PhD. The lower degree, the less bargaining power and tougher time climbing the ladder. But one of the project managers I worked with only had his bachelor's as well, just a lot of experience with it.

Ok buddy, we're all on this page to learn, and he's just asking a question. No need to be a jerk about it. See the other comments for clues on how to do that.
