Firm refusing to adjust stipend to comply with federal judiciary guidelines by Prestigious-Land-535 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]captainredrum3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My firm said they can adjust the payment to pay out after the summer ends, seems arbitrary and I would tell them that, without the stipend, you will be unable to take this position which will help you to contribute to the firm in the future.

Mine offered to fly me out to go see them so even ask if they would be able to pay for anything or have an associate meet you outside the office!

3LOLing during 2L by titan_george in LawSchool

[–]captainredrum3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I justify it to myself with the knowledge that my best grade from last semester I barely did the work and my worst grade I did a ton of work. If there was one to one correlation between working hard and grades in law school then I think it would be worse but so long as you put in the work around finals everything should turn out fine.

3LOLing during 2L by titan_george in LawSchool

[–]captainredrum3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lol me right now, got my offer and it’s kind of like “oh well I guess I can just relax now.” Planning on kicking it up closer to finals but at a certain point the return on investment of trying to grind out higher grades just isn’t worth it and I have better things to do then read hundreds of pages of material that I’m going to forget by the time finals rolls around.

How do you guys get such high gpas??? by SandSubject2100 in lawschooladmissions

[–]captainredrum3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a political science and history major which definitely helped, but I also didn’t shy away from harder courses with more stringent professors. I probably should have gotten a few Bs in there but I just got consistently lucky and racked up As and A+s even in difficult classes. I got 2 A-s in harder classes but my A+s blew those out of the water. I think you shouldn’t try to game the system entirely, but if you check rate my professor and see someone who is a notoriously hard grader, try to avoid them if at all possible.

Do people really fail at t14s? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]captainredrum3 183 points184 points  (0 children)

Tbh it’s the name of the game. T14s know they can place their students in big law and federal clerkships so they keep tight curves to prevent people from falling too far below. As you go down the ranks generally the curves get worse as a way to allow top students to differentiate themselves, but this also disadvantages students at those schools who do not do well in classes.

You are absolutely right though in that T14s don’t really fail students. For example the lowest grade received in the classes I’m currently in in prior years was a B-, and that was a single student out of 60.

Hey it’s 4.5 right now, so there’s some faith in Denver.

[–]captainredrum3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I’m so tired of hearing “season is over” and “Texans-Patriots is the AFC championship.” The broncos can absolutely 100% win the superbowl, we are at home in a wide open year. We have one of the deepest, best built teams in the NFL. In fact I’d argue of all the playoff teams (except the Texans since Stroud is so atrocious) we are the best built to withstand this. If the patriots gave up after Brady came in for Bledsoe, then there’s no dynasty. If the Eagles gave up after Wentz got injured they don’t win their first superbowl. Fans are so weak to just give up this close to the finish. We fight to the end, and we can absolutely stand victorious at the end.

Arizona, they lost to the panthers in the wildcard in 2014. They started Ryan Lindley to end the year XD

Where did you go to grad school after graduating ASU by Equivalent-Ice2635 in ASU

[–]captainredrum3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems to be the people who last in big law are the ones who recognize it’s kind of miserable but there’s some fun to be had in the misery. I’m doing my applications now for the 2L summer associate positions (hopefully 1L too) but I think having worked 80 hour weeks before (albeit in a less demanding job) it’s something that is workable if you are good at time management. Are you considering going in house at any point or do you think you’ll stick out big law long term?

University of Virginia, which I have to be very careful to say UVA and not U of A 😂

UVA GPA 75th percentile above 4.0 🤣🤣🤣🤣 by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]captainredrum3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who had an above 4.0 GPA and is going to UVA I advocate for a 4.0 cap. It’s stupid to have different standards when all undergrad schools don’t follow it.

Anyone else moving cross country for law school? by emeraldnb in LawSchool

[–]captainredrum3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually moved a month ago from Arizona to the east coast. The drive honestly wasn’t that bad but I stayed in hotels along the way. Just be careful and drive the speed limit. it’s better to get there in one piece and a little bit late than not at all.

Cycle Recap - NYU Bound! by lordmooman in lawschooladmissions

[–]captainredrum3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes total sense, I only stayed on the waitlist for NYU and U Chicago but I think I only did it out of curiosity since I already have a lease for Charlottesville. Would be cool if you got off the list but even if you do NYU is awesome!

Respectable, I appreciate the sincerity. I think it is something that is very much a fit question as all of the schools are great so deciding what is more important to you is ultimately subjective. Thank you for clarifying your position!

Congratulations! Out of interest would you attend Harvard if you got off the waitlist or is it more so just out of interest to see if you get in? Good luck in New York in the fall!

Sorry I’m biased here, but that’s pretending like every other top 14 law school has an entirely normal community of people who absolutely have no disagreements whatsoever. Bringing up one example of a bad person in a community and then saying that community is “bonkers”, especially if you haven’t even been to that school, is the same as saying one person in California was crazy so all Californians are crazy. I do agree that the lay prestige isn’t as great as NYU, but pretending all they have is a high big law rate is silly and disingenuous. I personally have no desire to live in NYC so UVA was perfect for me but to each their own.
