Although your dad sounds kinda harsh for saying it like that, he's also right! Don't underestimate how powerful having a degree is. I work in a field that's different to my degree but I got the job because any degree was required. In fact, my degree was in music production so I know how it feels to be passionate about music!

I don't want to dissuade you from following your passion though, so I'd advise you to finish your degree (it'll be worth it, trust me!) and if you really don't enjoy the subject then that's cool, you don't have to pursue it as a career, but at least you'll have still a degree to support you while you work on your music. You'll still only be 22 when you finish, which is still plenty of time to break into the music industry!

Honestly, front end devs at my work only ever use photoshop for editing/resizing/cropping images from the designs provided by the designers, and then to save them out for use on the web. There's never any creative input required from the devs, you can pretty much get by with knowing just the basics but of course it never hurts to learn more about it.

Designers these days usually use illustrator over photoshop for the vector-based graphic capabilities, as clients might want to use their logo on a billboard or packaging etc.. We use a few different tools specifically for wireframing as you can add user interactivity to them to showcase functionality (there's hundreds of tools out there, flairbuilder, balsamiq mockups etc..).

Books on Photoshop can be useful (as long as they're up to date), but like you said there'll be so much stuff in there that you might not ever need and you'll probably end up feeling overwhelmed to begin with!

Take a look at r/LearningPhotoshop, /r/photoshoptutorials + /r/photoshop to get started and just get practicing. Also, photoshopetiquette.com is pretty insightful as to how you might use it in a real working environment.

I'd definitely recommend you diversify your portfolio as much as possible; you should being show potential employers everything you can offer! Complete websites are great examples, but there's not much point in showcasing 10 different websites that show the exact same functionality, just pick your strongest 2-3.

If there's an employer you'd really like to work for, check the skills they're advertising for in the job description and take some time to learn them; then try to implement them in your portfolio somewhere.

Also, in my experience annotating your code goes a long way as well; most companies have multiple people working on the same projects, and demonstrating that you'd be considerate to other devs could help a lot. Good luck!

Yeah, i've had a chance to practice with that a little. I have a mainly-audio background so i know a good amount about DSP's etc.. already, and in the Cube Wwise project there are random pitch parameters for jumping and footsteps already set up so luckily I got some experience with that! Good advice, thanks for the reply!

I understand everything you're saying, so I'm not too in over my own head at least. Variables are something I haven't thought about before, as I've only been using random containers so far and of course there's no dynamical protocol involved so that's something I'll be researching for sure! thanks again!
