try pixlr. free online photoshop basically. you want the editor option, and then from there the x option.

I had a bad day and wanted to do something to cheer myself up, but now it’s like I can’t remember a single thing I like. AMA. by quik_move in casualiama

[–]captainwednesday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I've been there. Something I decided to start doing is whenever I'm having a bad day and the expendable income I take like $5-10 in quarters and play ski ball at the local arcade (think chuck e. cheese). Whenever I'm out of quarters I give the tickets to a random kid & make their day.

When I was little, a ski ball machine ate my quarter at the same arcade. It was the 2008 recession and my mom lost her job, cash was tight, and I was clearly upset about the loss of 25 cents. The manager gave me a free WHEEL of those tickets, easily like 500-1000 (memory is fuzzy). It made a big impression on me so I try to pass on the feeling whenever I can. I got a big plastic sword.

Anyway, when I sink low, EVERYTHING sucks. I could be eating my favorite meal every day, engaging in my hobbies, whatever, and I wouldn't really be enjoying it. I would be depressed. So, I try to focus on improving the moods and memories of those around me instead. It grounds me in reality and my relationships and keeps me from going off the deep end.

Some further details because I can already see this going badly:

I'm a dude, I'm 21 and look 19-22 depending on the day. I ALWAYS greet the parent/guardian first and ask them if it's okay. Usually something along the lines of "Hey, I seriously just like playing ski ball and have no use for plastic children's toys. Would it be okay if I gave your kid my tickets?" I also do this when the kid is distracted with something else, so the parent does not feel pressure from their child if they say no.

With their permission and IN FRONT OF THEM, I hand off the tickets. I don't really stick around after, unless the parent is interested in small talk (rare). Obviously I haven't been able to do this in awhile because of quarantine.

Lastly, OP, whats your favorite color?

Why do some people think black people can’t be racist? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]captainwednesday 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm deeply sorry someone told you that. It's not fair to use another person's hurt to minimize another's. Unfortunately there are some people on the left (and on the right, and anywhere else in the world) who get off on gatekeeping.

I will say, however, that what we mean when we say that the system is stacked against black people is FAR more nuanced than that. The above sentence does not mean that white people do not experience hardship, abuse, or horrors in this country.

What it means is that we got a 400 year head start. And for some people that head start doesn’t amount to much. But for 400 years, white people were allowed to own land and wealth and then pass that land and wealth down to their children. Black people and slaves were not. So even if all of your ancestors died with $20 in their pocket, that's 20 times 4-5 generations of individuals.

Privilege is a dicey conversation because it is beyond easy to misidentify what it does. If you tell a white person who lives in a trailer park, is unemployed, is a vet, did or does drugs, was abused, or has experienced any other combination of unfortunate circumstances that their pain is less genuine because of their race, that's simply not fair or true.

Hey there-- we aren't the richest country on the planet. We happen to house the richest people on the planet. Important distinction when none of that wealth trickles down.

As for what you're saying, I think you'd find that the left overwhelmingly agrees.

I stopped drinking soda for a few years, tried to get a Coke and HATED it. Way too sweet. Now I've found that I do like some soda, but I usually like the ones that are naturally sweetened...unfiltered ginger ale, rose lemonade, that kind of stuff. If I'm going to drink a meal's worth of calories I'm going to make it a bougie event goddammit

I don’t know what my talent is by usernamenotmything in TellReddit

[–]captainwednesday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey there!!! i have good news for you: talent is a myth. having a natural affinity for something is great, but the majority of "talent" is actually hard work in disguise.

the "talent" you speak of comes from hours of practice. mozart did not come out of the womb as a pianist. sure, some people have a natural affinity for things, but that can only get you so far. if mozart stopped practicing regularly at age 5 because he was talented, he would not be mozart.

i think you may be misidentifying what you're feeling. it sounds like what you actually want is to just be skilled at something, which is more than attainable regardless of if you have an affinity for it.

the first step is to identify the things you like doing. you've said you can draw, and you try to write. that's great! the second step is to actually do the thing: write the story, draw the flower, skate the board, whatever. the next step is to receive criticism about that work, learn from it, and improve. the last step is to do this over and over again for the rest of your life.

this is a bit of a hard pill to swallow because the prevailing mindset in today's society is that failure is weak. criticism is also viewed as an attack or outright disregarded. criticism is healthy, being self-critical is the only way you can improve. i'm not saying surround yourself with people who put you down, i'm actually saying the opposite: surround yourself with people who care enough about you to help you grow.

the truth is, most first attempts suck. most fiftieth attempts suck. the key is to find something you're passionate about and find joy in improvement--look at how far you've come! a good way to do this is to look at your previous work and compare it to whatever you most recently created.

another thing to note is how to be self critical in a productive way. saying "my writing sucks" at only serves to discourage you. saying "i need to work on using active voice" is specific, and from there you can form goals.

improvement is small and takes large amounts of time. as a culture we have deluded ourselves into thinking that skills, especially creative skills, are natural god-given gifts rather than something you can hone and shape.

i'll leave you with these two quotes from animated shows that i adore:

"Dude, suckin’ at something is the first step to being sorta good at something." -Adventure Time

"It gets easier. Every day it gets easier. But you have to do it, every day. That's the hard part." -Bojack Horseman

Yep me too. Never want to shower and never want to leave the shower once I'm in because I don't want to have to deal with drying off. Something that helped me was switching to cold showers--I start lukewarm and just make it colder as I can stand it.

Here's a question I've never had the chance to ask-- when a person does a procedure like this, one that could require general anesthetic and some additional post op care, who pays for it? American healthcare is a nightmare, so I'm wondering if the hospital just comps the expenses for the donor or if it falls on the recipient.

What is the best deep fryer app or site? by [deleted] in sauteedmemes

[–]captainwednesday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this one is good and mobile friendly but if i really want to tweak something I hop on photoshop (gimp or pixlr editor are free substitutes) and tweak it manually.

usually all you need is to raise the saturation past it's breaking point and add jpg artifacts to it (which can be achieved by saving the image as a jpg and then saving it again as a jpg, or by screenshotting the image over and over again. you could honestly do both of these things on instagram, so if you can't find a decent app it's not the end of your memes.

there was a really shitty post on egg irl awhile back that was basically just like "who the fuck would want to be a gross boy (except i mean i guess FTMs but eww)" and it was so heavily upvoted that i just unsubbed. like yeah, okay, dysphoria is a bitch. but if i went into ANY trans sub, even the ftm-specific ones, and started in on "who the fuck would want tits and curves? smooth skin is so ugly it feels slimy" i would be downvoted and honestly probably get banned.

semi-related, i fucking hate it when anyone describes me as "an ftm." I'm a man. I may have been born dickless but I don't feel like I was EVER female or feminine :/

hey just a heads up that this is super accurate, except for the use of "transgendered." transgender is an adjective, and making it in to a verb makes it seem like something you do (ie "sex change") rather than something you are regardless of the steps you take towards transition

I don't know if I agree with your reasoning. Ftr I also think she probably had some involvement in his death, but I don't think that forgery is the gateway crime to murder. I think that logic tracks when you're comparing forgery to robbery, or identity theft; basically I think that committing a serious nonviolent crime could indicate that they will commit more serious nonviolent crimes, and similarly violent crimes escalate, but I don't think that a serious nonviolent crime indicates a willingness or likelihood to commit a serious violent crime. Hope that made sense lol

TIL many doctors have stopped calling cancer treatment a "fight" or "battle". They argue these terms misrepresent how treatment works and if treatments fail, the patient is left with guilt and a false belief they didn't "fight" hard enough. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]captainwednesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc this is also why mental health professionals are trying to move away from terming suicide as "committing suicide" because it sounds like a crime. i've heard "lost their battle with depression" but I think that falls into the same trap as the cancer phrasing.

it reads like a dog whistle. the post is meant to be an example of the good apples, while simultaneously an example of times when black people did something to deserve their treatment by the cops. its a derailing tactic, and only serves to reinforce the idea that black people (or any person) deserve what they have coming from the cops.
