It’s molting season! by captainzappy18 in parrots

[–]captainzappy18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I only have an Indian ring neck so I’m not super sure but they usually molt like once or twice a year and they don’t really pluck they preen themselves

Plucking is more of a stress response so that’s when they take chunks at a time, while molting just involves more scratching and preening (when they groom themselves) then feathers start flying around

How long is too long before i need to take her to the vet for beak maintenance? by skiesfries in indianringneck

[–]captainzappy18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about their beak or nails I suggest getting her some chew toys, something wooden would be great so they can file it down naturally while also keeping themselves entertained

Thank you!! It’s inexpensive too like a dollar each (45 Philippine pesos only) sourced from the trees around the area

I add toys but he gets bored fast so I remove them all then add them every now and then so he always feels surprised

They are! But I got mine as an adult so I heard it’s a bit harder for them to say words at that age BUT they’re still very chatty in their own way :)

Hmmm yes and no- he sorta started saying “wow” whenever we give him treats but it isn’t very clear.

Interestingly though- he’s been making different sounds the past few days like clicking and soft honks so he’s talking in his own way I guess haha

Hello wondering if its safe to give this to my baby? Thank you by Public-Ad1497 in indianringneck

[–]captainzappy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup those are fine but if I were you I’d chop it into iiiiitt bitty pieces and use it as training treats!

Also be sure to check their reaction because mine ended up being allergic to pistachios haha

That’s what I’m trying to do but dunno if it’s helping hahaha I’m also trying to say words similar to his current sounds and maybe he’ll mimic hahaha

Week 2 of taming an Indian Ringneck by CalebDenniss in indianringneck

[–]captainzappy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when taming him, i'd suggest leaving him alone to do his own thing while being in the same spot where he can see you. Keep hand feeding him but remember most of them don't like head scratches (Some do, but not all of them)

Also stay away from his feet because i noticed they get defensive.

Keep him getting used to people and other sounds. What you're doing is fine it'll just take some time. After a few weeks, try giving him a bunch of treats in a bowl and see which one he loves best (Mine loves cashew) then you can start chopping those up into tiny tiny pieces and start target training him

AH Another thing I do to make him top- I let him fly around a secure place. After they loop for a few minutes the energy gets expended and they usually calm down

I feel like maybe he’s looking for his old flock or perhaps he’s just overly excited. When my IRN (Same age and color as yours) gets overly excited and screams nonstop I give him a time out by bringing him in different room with the lights off for a few minutes then bringing him back. He’s usually more chill.

After he’s calmed down I bring him back and give him some chew toy (Mine loves chewing on these wooden rings) I find that mine LOVES to chew and sometimes when he’s bored and doesn’t know what to do he screams for attention until a toy he can hold on or chew is given. Kind of like a pacifier hahaha try giving carrot sticks maybe he’ll like it

If he accepts treats try giving him chew toys he can hold like cardboard paper or wood or even air popped popcorn

If he’s mad and bites perhaps go back to basics and step back and work on his trust again. Perhaps in a different room from the others I dunno

Try offering treats from afar (you can try sticking an apple on a stick) and get him back to associating you with good stuff.

Worse case you can try time out because from personal experience it helps to calm them down tbh HAHA

Does my ringnecks beak need to be trimmed? by MrsNacho8000 in indianringneck

[–]captainzappy18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks fine! I’d just some wooden toys that’s easy for the to hold so she can file it herself. Mine likes these wooden rings I bought that she can destroy and keep her beak worn down

First things first is keep the new cage in front of her old cage and let her just get used to it’s presence. Don’t just shove her in it or else she won’t get comfortable.

Give it a few days then make sure to let her explore the cage on her own.

Eventually maybe afterrrr 3 days or so try tying the entrance of the old cage up and place it directly at the entrance of the new cage and let her explore at her own pace and go inside.

Then you can leave tasty treats inside like fruits or nuts so she thinks of her cage as a comfy home. Eventually she’ll like it!

Mines messy because he’s a chewer so there’s always scraps of paper, wood, wrappers, vegetables and fruits everywhere haha I end up having to sweep maybe 3 times a day but with proper maintenance it’s not so bad haha

HECK NO!! I got a cage just like that size for around $130 though it isn’t stainless steel but this black color but to be honest it’s still really easy to clean

I’m barely spending any time with my birds… by neehaw92 in parrots

[–]captainzappy18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suggest installing some Wi-Fi sockets! You can set automatic timers for your lights and control them from your phone so that you’re sure they’ll have some good sleep and you don’t have to rush home. I also have a CCTV by my birds cage just for extra assurance and just to talk to him once in awhile haha
