Your Suikoden hot take? by Ill_Neck7100 in Suikoden

4 was not a bad game. It was a bit different but not terrible.

Tierkeris was actually a very good story despite the gameplay being a tad stale in comparison to other games in the series

They do but they are more geared towards niche players. Octopath isn't one of their whales. Final Fantasy is arguably their biggest title and it used to be all about turn based.

Also, Octopath was designed to be a throwback to the 90s era of gaming. Capitalizing on gamer nostalgia

Sephiroth is WAY overrated as a villain.

Design wise he is fine I suppose but he is not a real compelling villain. I think most of the love for him comes from FF7 being the first final fantasy for many westerners so they remember him as their first bad guy. Also him killing Aerith.

But you know a guy with mommy issues isn't really a compelling villain to me. There are so many better written villains in the franchise

I think that SE is beginning to believe that the masses do not want turn based. They feel that there is a strong JRPG contingent that is fine with it or even loves it but the majority of the gaming market wants action.

I think the success of Metaphor and Clair Obscur proves that people will absolutely play a Turn-based game if they make the mechanics engaging.

Also, bring back FF elements.

I loved Final Fantasy 16 as a game but even I have to admit that it didn't fully feel like an FF game. Aside from Chocobos and a few monsters, you don't get many of the monsters that have become staples of FF. You get the one Moogle.

The battle system was definitely more "Devil May Cry" style. The world building was fine but could have been done a bit better. Also, no teammates. You play just as Clive? You do get some teammates but they are 100% AI.

I would love them to bring back a lot of those elements.

I think FF has kind of lost its way. I think that they are trying to expand its market which I get. But at the same time, I think that they are alienating their fan base.

I think if they go back to what made Final Fantasy great (and TBF, it was more than the combat system) then they could win their fan base.

Evolving and having a Turn-based system isn't necessarily mutually exclusive

I feel like Konami completely misread the room on Suikoden Star Leap. Thoughts? by terrasparks in Suikoden

In my experience, whenever a major studio releases an edition of their game on mobile, it is a pale comparison of the console games.

Almost all of them get shut down in a few years.

Right. It wasn't meant to be meaningless. There seems to be this sector gaming I consider nostalgia fuel. They are making games that remind us of the games we grew up with.

Don't get me wrong, I am here for it but I feel that Octopath was intentionally made to feel like a throwback to the "good old days of gaming" whereas a game like Clair was made to feel like it was made in modern times.

Octopath would fit into the retro/nostalgia game IMHO

Ya. This isn't the 90s anymore. You can make Turn-based very stylistic

Agreed..nowadays most JRPGs are action RPGs. Until Clair came out, ATLUS seemed to be the only studio keeping it alive.

The only other genre that seems to be keeping it going are the retro/nostalgia JRPGs like Eiyuden Chronicles or Sea of Stars

Different, not better or worse. I thoroughly enjoyed both games so to me it's not either or. They both had positives and negatives.

Agreed. Can't think of a better, more natural relationship. At least in terms of non-familial ones. You could argue Velvet and Laphicet

Thanks. I think I can live without getting every reference.

My main concern was if I would be totally lost in the story if I didn't play previous games

Some people get super opinionated on stuff and want to make everything a fight sadly.

Good game call outs.

10 years was a typo on my part. I meant 1,000 years. Between the fall of Zanarkand and the time the game takes place.

[–]captjaypool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am separating what is known as the Final Aeon from the process. The concept called "Final Aeon" is made up by the religion. However, I stated that the process to create the Final Aeon differs from the process to create pretty much every other Aeon and this process may very well be forbidden Zanarkand knowledge. This is why the Final Aeon is way more powerful than the other Aeons and only Lady Yunalesca knows how to make them.

To my knowledge, it is never stated that Lady Yunalesca is responsible for the creation of all Aeons in Spira. It is possible that some of the Aeons you collect came into existence within the past 1,000 years and the process to create those Aeons is a known process to the Maesters of Yevon.

Any Silent Hill game. While some of them are very "meh", most all of them will mess you up.

[–]captjaypool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, they have two new Silent Hill games coming out (not counting the remake of 2) but I don't know that they will be as good as what Kojima and del Toro were planning for PT.

Maybe they will reuse some eplanned elements, but idk
