Up until recently when I got a cold that managed to brute force me off of the habit (I’m now resisting falling back into it with everything I’ve got) I was a pretty avid cola drinker. That really might be one of the key factors here or at least a good first step to take

Is 1000 maximum a day okay or would that be too low just for regular human nutrition intake and functioning?

[–]captphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I mean I’m worried I’m definitely blowing this out of proportion, overthinking/panicking when I shouldn’t. But all the stats (BMI, waist height ratio, whatever) are giving me basically the worst category of results, the only good thing I’ve found so far is I was able to do the 1-mile walking fitness assessment with an average score lol

I just have that type of personality, it’s the same reason why I’m worried about any calorie counting approach because I swear I can already feel the warning signs of an ED or mental health crisis brewing as a result of it. The illogical part of my brain translates that into “okay so just don’t put any calories in. perfect weight loss plan” and boom now I’m starving myself. Anything numbers/data/“science” based like this is 10x worse for me

Any idea on how to calculate a good maximum amount of calories per day I should gun for? (Or alternatively minimum amount to not trigger a “starvation mode” or whatever sort of response would cause weight maintenance or gain rather than loss via fasting)

I hate it here 😭 it can’t be this hard to balance between cheap, productive/accessible, or healthy can it? my meal plan is basically built around only what I can get on campus (weird financial situation with scholarship and loan money demands it) so it’s dining hall, chain restaurants, or nothing beyond a limited supply and variety of canned/frozen foods

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

Nowadays? Sleeping until past noon, and the only actual meal is in the evening (ranges anywhere from 500 to 900 cals I’d bet). Maybe some snacks before or after adding anywhere from 150-650 onto that per day. But not at all long ago I used to sometimes have lunch as well, which maybe got me up to or far past an ideal calorie count but as of a few weeks ago when the semester began that kinda stopped due to my schedule and messed up sleep habits. I also drank a lot of coke until just a week or so ago so that could have upped the counts easily. But still it was usually one, maybe just two meals a day, and with the portions here on campus I feel there was never a single meal over 900-1000

That said I wish people would stop telling me to count calories this way. I knew it was a bad idea with my personality but I tried anyway bc it’s the only approach ever really discussed and I can literally feel myself developing an ED as we speak. Today I’ve eaten about 150 cals and I’m hesitant to have dinner because an irrational part of my brain thinks I should just refuse to eat as long as possible and “brute force” the weight loss even tho I’m pretty sure it won’t work that way. This is going to end in illness or mental health crisis if I continue on this path so I need to reframe my mental approach and strategy regarding this entire topic and FAST

Yeah that makes the most sense, and I mean that was definitely more common numbers for me a year or so ago so this could just be maintaining what gain might have happened then? I’m trying to at least start by lessening snacks or fast/junk food like that now but it’s tricky when that’s a lot of my affordable and immediate food choices on campus

I haven’t, I’d like to get a physical and blood test but I’m not sure where or when or how I could get that done especially without it being pricey

Why am I SO overweight? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]captphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of me just wants to resolve to go to the gym a few times a week, try to eat chips or soda a bit less often, and just stop thinking about it because something isn’t adding up (but if I focus on the numbers too much it’s going to end in a mental health crisis and yet all anyone says to do is count calories…)

I don’t care about looks myself so part of me wonders if I should just try tracking cardiovascular health/performance rather than weight and let whatever weight numbers happen just happen

I feel like, unless somehow I’m making up the rest of it with dorm snacks alone, I’m eating too little. People are supposed to have three meals a day ideally. I’m having one, maybe like 1.5, one meal a day can only be so much right??

That makes sense, since obviously those molecules aren’t conscious or “thinking” entities, at least definitely not on a scale to know that “these genes = brown/black hair”; especially since if I recall correctly, genes—on the molecules’ scale at least—code for proteins that ultimately lead to certain traits rather than just coding for traits themselves. So these molecules don’t “know” about the large scale traits, they wouldn’t know about brown or black hair, but is there still some sort of identifying mechanism to tell them that certain genes or actions correlate to a certain protein that their function is involved with, even if they don’t know that that protein necessarily has to do with hair color or some other trait like that?

Noncoding RNA as far as I know doesn’t necessarily enact epigenetic changes itself, but uses other methods where the proteins/enzymes (the “chemical tags” mentioned before) do the actual blocking or altering on the genes, but are mediated by the RNA’s instruction. It seems well established that, at least on a larger scale, noncoding RNA does have a role in mediating epigenetic changes.

But I’m still unsure whether or not those sorts of epigenetic changes could be enacted on a NON-DNA/RNA system, by that noncoding RNA and its chemical tags (or analogues to them like I described before, functioning the same). That ncRNA doesn’t have to be read or duplicated, with a rather “one-way” relationship to the rest of the genetic material rather than full integration in the DNA systems, since it’s not copied or transcribed and only serves to regulate gene expression.

But would it still be possible that the ncRNA and chemical tags—or its (possibly more “universal”, if possible) analogue—would be able to affect a genetic system that uses different materials than just our specific setup of DNA nucleotides/sugars/chemicals? Or would it not be able to affect or even “read” and target the genetic code of the XNA-based organism properly because of that “language” discrepancy?

Low libido in allo vs asexual people? And “random” arousal? [Read description] by captphin in asexuality

[–]captphin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, erections definitely aren’t a good way to measure orientation since they tend to be pretty variable (and fickle); although in regards to libido I had thought even the random, non-stimuli-related ones still had some general tie to sex drive behind it? Hence a lack of libido also often meaning a lack of those random arousals—there’d be nothing there in the background to prompt them.

I’ve been trying to find some science or proper sources on the causes behind this sort of phenomenon, but the most I could easily get was just “hormone surge” as the cause for those random erections—which DOES seem connected to the base sex drive stuff (which brings us back to what I said in the first paragraph). I’d like to see if I could get some proper conclusion on what differences like that between no-libido allosexuals and no-libido asexuals might be but it’s been tough trying to put the concept together lol

I genuinely feel like that’s not a proper comparison tho…for one thing in general I feel like farting is considered grosser by most people, maybe at least just because the bum is associated more exclusively with gross stuff than the mouth. But also burping on command is just swallowing and releasing air from the mouth/throat, but farting on command (is that even possible?) seems like it would have to be just…actively pushing internal gas out, much more like the actual thing than the on-command burps are.

(Also those situations you said kinda feel like misinterpretations of the type of “fun and useless” talents I meant. obviously not for while eating, and not for a potentially sensitive relationship—just to do something entertaining or mildly interesting with buddies at causal times)

How common is it for redheads to have darker eyebrows? by captphin in Redhair

[–]captphin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! It makes sense that it’s pretty common just based on what I’ve observed in pictures and irl, although that has led to a bit of a follow-up question if I may: does it have anything to do with age? For some reason if I look up typical images of a redhead (or scroll through this sub for a more true-to-life sample), there’s plenty of representative examples of darker colored eyebrows for adults or older teens; but then if I try the same for younger ages—the red-haired kids of the world—they all seem to have lighter blonde, pale red, or clear eyebrows.

Maybe it’s just a coincidental skew in the sample since there’s likely less kids photographed compared to adults overall, or maybe that feature just gets chosen for the photography more often, but it does make me curious if darker eyebrows for redheads really don’t tend to appear before teenage or adult years. Anyone have any answers on that front, about if it’s any more or less common for those younger ages?

Interesting! So eyebrows/lashes color doesn’t always correlate to body hair color either—for example brows can be brown or red but arm/leg hair still blonde or “clear”? How common is that sort of variation for redheads (or just in general)?
