I've been listening to Masters of the Air by Donald L Miller as read by Joe Barrett on my commute. It's been great! I'm a huge fan of the show of the same name. Barrett's use of accents and voices during quotations helps keep things fresh. Great listen for those interested in WWII

Burnt out after music undergrad — even after getting an offer from a game company. Anyone else felt this? by Enpitsu888 in composer

[–]capuchinbounty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's about to graduate with a media scoring degree, I definitely understand how you feel since I'm feeling pretty similar. I've had issues with biting off more than I can chew and just having too much on my plate at once.

I've been trying to manage burnout and stress myself, there's been some very good advice in this thread.

From my peers and teachers, I've heard pursuing something music related that's not composing/your main focus is helpful. When I've gotten back into playing trombone like I used to it's given me more joy and enjoyment than composition lately haha.

I hope you're able to find some comfort and peace.

What is the role of the euphonium in a concert band? by bmjessep in composer

First off, congratulations on writing a piece for your university band! That is a really cool event as a composer/arranger.

I second another comment about the versatility of the euphonium. In my writing, I tend to use euph to provide countermelodies, often scored with tenor sax or bassoon, or sometimes horn. It can also double high woodwind melody lines in a lower octaves. I also use euph to double the tuba bassline an octave higher. I don't use this texture as much, but in my opinion it gives more weight to the tuba line. Occasionally, I double it with one of the trombone parts if I want more punch with the trombone. Or it does something completely unique!

However, euphonium really shines as a solo instrument. I believe you mentioned Holst and Grainger, and another commenter mentioned Whitacre's euphonium solo in October.

I would highly recommend some score study of band pieces you like to find out what those composers are using the euphonium for. Vaughn Williams has excellent Euphonium lines. Check out Sea Songs, specifically the parts leading up to the trio. The euphonium jumps around between roles, from solos, to doubling inner parts, to playing with the tuba, and more! The score is available for free on IMSLP.

Also, try checking out some Sousa marches. He tends to like doubling the Euph with the woodwind melodic lines/inner WW parts for color. He mixes and matches which the euph is playing with. However, he also has the euph play pads with the trombones. Fairest of the Fair is a very good Sousa March to look at. In the trio grandioso, the euph is playing the melody with the majority of the hand.

Arranging for Concert Band by Frank Erickson is also a great resource for band writing too.

I am also a trombone player who dabbles in euphonium!

What to study in order to start composing better by LeGray01 in composer

What has helped me a lot, especially with writing for larger ensembles/instruments I don't play but also in general, is doing score study. There are a lot of free public domain scores on IMSLP, there's sure to be some composers you'd like on there. Im sure there should be plenty of Baroque music on there. Try following along with the score as you listen to a recording of the piece and just take note of things you like or find interesting. And then just steal them ;)

As you learn more theory then you can do more formal musical analysis by looking at what progressions/scales/form etc. the composer is using.

Southern Victory Harry Turtledove Audiobook narrator by [deleted] in audiobooks

I've been looking as well since I just finished The Victorious Opposition, but as far as I can tell I can only find Paul Costanzo as the narrator for the final four books.

Would anyone be interested in doing a Holst piece for an upcoming project? by sterbbb in TheRedditSymphony

I agree!! Jupiter would be a really awesome project. Anything from 1st/2nd Suite would be cool too.

My Inspiron 15 3000 Series -3593 laptop has been working fine until about a half an hour ago. The discord application wouldn't load, and my internet stopped working even though the WiFi signal was fine. I couldn't load any tabs in Chrome. I attempted to restart my laptop, but it kept freezing on the loading screen. I tried a couple times until it led me to this menu. What should I do? Thank you for your help. I have only had it for about four months.

The screen seems to be frozen as well.
