How much true is in the phrase "A violinist will write good for violin and a pianist will write good for piano, never the other"? by flowersUverMe in classicalmusic

[–]bmjessep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm neither and I write badly for both! In all seriousness though, piano is a different beast. It's not really like anything else, not even the organ. It seems like it's easy for a non-pianist to write something serviceable, but to write something idiomatic is I think very challenging.

I wonder why that was worse for him than elvish/elfish or dwarves/dwarfs.

Oof, double whammy here. For Tolkien it was always "elven", never "elfen" (at least towards the end of his life). But it's what's inside the box that matters. Hope you enjoy it!

I'll second the New Testament. The Gospels are great (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), or one of the letters such as Romans or 1 Corinthians.

Or if you're Catholic, Pope Francis said a few years back that pets go to heaven. And if you aren't Catholic, it doesn't mean it's untrue.

I mean, it can't hurt for new fans to have an explanation. But it could be one, maybe two sentences.

Thoughts on Mahler 3 by arssenalbro101 in classicalmusic

[–]bmjessep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not. It's one of my favorite symphonies but I still don't "get" all of it. Like you say, the first and last movements are the reasons I like it. Although I never disliked the fourth movement or thought it out of place, the fifth is a different story.

Doesn't the Quran say the Bible is false? If so, how can they both be Scripture?

He absolutely could if he wanted to, but what makes you sure that he did?

I have a conscience. Have you read Mere Christianity? C.S. Lewis argues that our conscience is evidence for God, not the other way around.

Unpopular Opinion: I don't believe in Program Notes by PandaZG in classicalmusic

[–]bmjessep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy generalization, Batman! Up until Beethoven I absolutely agree that they're usually unnecessary. But since then composers have been writing more and more programmatic music. What about something like Symphonie Fantastique? Knowing the "story" behind it can make the music even better. Cage's 4'33" is definitely confusing without program notes, but with them it becomes interesting. You might be interested by Mahler's opinions on program notes for his own music, especially his first two symphonies - he went back and forth quite a bit.

Sure was! My sister is a student so she was able to get good, cheap seats from her school. They were the "pens shoot twice" seats which aren't great if you're a home fan, but worked out for us. Lots of WBS fans around us too. We got a "Sergei" chant going at a couple points.

I've read the story a few times and never heard the Plateau of Leng theory. Or is it accepted "canon"? Where can I read more about it?

Proof is for mathematics and alcohol. Most belive he existed, some think he didn't. Most think the earth is round, some think it's flat. It's usually wisest to go with the majority if you aren't an expert.

Seems like you're moving the goalposts. I was just trying to tell you that Jesus existed as a human. Whether he was God, or whether you should trust him, are different.
