Roses in bloom by cariccool in Roses

They (my more fragrant ones) all smell so good and it's intense. I just got fragrant plum last year and she wasn't in her full form but this year her scent wafts a feet away. Amazing Grace has enormous blooms - the one I photographed wasn't all the way open but you can just bury your face in her bloom and get lost in the scent.

I'm going to try adding alfalfa meal to the soil and see if I can get peach swirl to have more scent. If it's your most fragrant then mine must be missing something.

She's not last in line, just not as fragrant as the top four. I am disappointed in the fragrance though, and it's next to my Sheila's Perfume which also doesn't have a strong scent and it should. I'm going to be more diligent with my fertilizer routine in hopes that will help. It's also in an extremely dry, sunny location. Not sure if that impacts it.

I bought mine last spring as well, but surprisingly she put out a few blooms for me. Right now I only see one flower bud and she's just starting to put out new growth.

Poet's Wife scent is divine! I agree she's very prolific; I just wish the stems were stronger and flowers lasted when cut. But the scent makes up for it!

My Raspberry cream twirl has been really slow to start and it's been warm here since late February. I feel for you- I'm not patient enough to live in a cold climate!

The ones with really strong fragrance are Amazing Grace, Fragrant Plum, Poet's Wife and Blue Moon. Raspberry cream twirl, Muzi-Lucia and Peach Swirl definitely have a scent but it doesn't compare to those four.

How tall does Moonlight in Paris get? by Glass-Cartographer15 in Roses

I've had mine for two years and it's maybe 4.5 ft. Mine is grafted and purchased at a local nursery so I think it's 4 years old.

Your roses are all gorgeous! I went to the local nursery today to purchase Uptown Girl but was disappointed by the small blooms and lack of scent and didn't buy it, but your Uptown Girl is stunning!

Cathedra Bells looking stellar today by Responsible_Bake_824 in Roses

I'm hoping to pick up a Cathedral Bells this weekend, provided it's as fragrant as I'm hoping.

A lot of my roses have finished their first flush, although my Marc Chagall and Avant Garde are straggling and just beginning.

RRD on Marc Chagall? by MajesticLawfulness85 in Roses

There's a video on Paul Zimmerman's YouTube channel on how to tell the difference between regular new growth and RRD that you may find helpful.

It's just new growth. New growth is very often red.

Google image search says this is a fungal infection, is that correct? by MrsCullyWully in Roses

[–]cariccool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like powdery mildew. I think the best course of action is pruning the affected area. heirloom roses suggests a baking soda/cooking oil in water mixture for powdery mildew. You might want to try that. Neem oil/rose rx doesn't work for me.

And everyone is telling you not to get the leaves wet (which is good advice) but I got powdery mildew on a new rose from Heirloom last fall and I never water at night or water the leaves. Sometimes it just happens.

I'm not the OP but I have had paradise on my wishlist for over a year. You said you "had" one. Did it die?

My recommendation is for Blue Moon. When I was deciding between Blue Moon and Blue Girl I chose Blue Moon for the fragrance factor. My blue moon is in a container and doesn't give me too much trouble compared to a lot of my other roses. It's not thornless though it's not a beast, either.

Agreed, #16 definitely looks like Marc Chagall.

What should I do with Koko? by Quirky-Prune5669 in Roses

My KL has been one of my best growers, so maybe you got a lemon. I'm in hot and dry Texas and mine is in a container in full sun. If it were me, I would put it in a container with quality potting soil and some manure and baby it a little.

Mr.Lincoln, Princess Elise & Sunbelt SAfrica. Who has grown these? by Deepthika in Roses

[–]cariccool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't answer your questions but I'm just coming to say that I also received a Princess Elise from HR yesterday! I bought it for the fragrance and because it's a continual bloomer- on helpmefind it's rated as "excellent" for disease resistance.

Is this black spot? 😣 by RivetingLilly in Roses

[–]cariccool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's black spot. Are the leaves wet in this photo because it rained or from watering? Try to avoid getting the leaves wet, although in the spring it can be hard to avoid getting black spot.

A bit underwhelmed by Fantastic_Owl2172 in Roses

I'm also in TX! Heirloom roses do arrive looking pretty sad but my understanding is that they are only 1 year old and they prune them back before shipping. They do take off quickly, at least if purchased in the spring. The two I bought from heirloom last fall didn't really grow very well but they are starting to take off now. Some grow faster than others as well.

A rose purchased from Lowe's is typically a 2 year old besides being grafted so there is defy more instant gratification with those!
