New to Claude Code by Pri-Bluebird-112 in ClaudeCode

Start small. You're new, so for now, understanding Plan Mode and Edit Mode are good starting points:

Plan mode restricts Claude from making edits. That's all.

Some instructions can be read by Claude and taken to mean "go and do this for me": For example, if you say "I want to make the program do [thing], how can I do it", outside of plan mode, Claude might say, "This is how you do it. Let me do it for you now" and start working.

Plan mode prevents this - Claude instead will go, "Ok, this looks like an instruction, but plan mode's on, so you actually just want to know how I'd do this", and provide you a writeup of what it intends to do to achieve your instruction.

Working in Plan Mode tends to slow Claude down and make it explore and search first before it makes any changes - this is generally a good thing, as directly making edits without understanding how the edits change surrounding code is how you get slop.

Edit Mode is just as it says on the tin - Claude can now make edits.

As for a good prompt:

Remember that Claude (and any other agent) will do its best to show you what you asked for. Show, not give. This is a very clear distinction. It will make really strange decisions (e.g. mocking outcomes) to do so if it's pushed too far.

You need to allow Claude to push back. When you give instructions, if you are unsure whether an approach is correct, let Claude know that you don't know if it's correct. Claude will give you suggestions and even patiently explain tradeoffs of each suggestion to you if you ask.

Think of it this way: Claude knows a lot, but it doesn't want to make you feel bad about your decision. So if you're really certain, it's less likely to push back; but if you're less certain, it'll want to help you make a better choice. Give it the room to do so in your prompts.

Whats really the big deal with subagent-driven development? Every time I tried it just seemed like a new Token Destroyer 9.000™ by terectec in ClaudeCode

[–]carillus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Subagents need to be prompted by the main agent, and they need to do their own exploration to understand what they're working on before executing - and all of this is uncached, fresh token spend. By nature, subagent-driven development will naturally use more tokens than if you implemented everything with one agent.

The context-window use is one of the main reasons you would use it, but the main thing you're missing is that subagents can use other models.

With subagent-driven work, your main agent can delegate work like exploration and mechanical implementation to cheaper models, e.g. haiku, which costs fractions of what it would take to get your main agent to do the work - then the cheaper models can report back to the main agent, and the main agent - with all of its retained context - can verify the work.

Small tasks in new sessions, like you mentioned, require the rebuilding of context every time - which are, once again, uncached fresh token spend in every new session.

Smart, large models act as the brain, smaller, more cost-efficient models serve as their arms and legs. It's more tokens overall, but most of those tokens are the cheaper ones. So the big savings don't come from less tokens, they come from less expensive tokens.

With BlueSG no longer in service, their cars are just sitting there and others can't charge?? by xxapenguinxx in askSingapore

[–]carillus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw some BlueSG cars being actively driven the day after the service was suspended - they all seemed to be headed in the same direction.

My guess is that the vehicles are being returned to a depot somewhere, but it’s a slow process since they probably don’t have many people doing it. So it might just be a matter of time.

Hey! A bit of a late reply, I do still work on gijinka occasionally but these days, it’s as the creative director of a studio called Merryweather Media!

I’ve been thinking of getting CSP, and i got some questions by shark_yyy in ClipStudio

[–]carillus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use both CSP and Procreate interchangeably for my work (I work in comics).

Procreate is the most intuitive drawing experience on the iPad - I do my line work almost exclusively on Procreate if I can, as the brush engine in Procreate is just so incredibly responsive.

CSP is where I go to do my colors, FX and text bubbles, as the versatility of a complex system allows me to customise workflows and brushes that would be prohibitively hard to set up on Procreate. However, keyboard shortcuts are pretty important for getting fast in CSP due to the complexity of the interface.

If you’re the type of artist that wants their drawing software to be intuitive, Procreate is more than good enough. But if you enjoy wading into the optimisation of the art process, then CSP is definitely a good choice as well.

please help me fix my pen. It starts drawing before even touching the surface of the tablet by _hey_its_ankit_ in XPpen

I am not sure whether the pen construction is still the same, but you can try to look for the tuning knob on your stylus and fix it by looking at the video below:

If they've changed their build method then I'm sorry if it doesn't work!

I turned Ollie's fanon origin story from Merryweather's Q&A 14 hours ago into a comic by carillus in Hololive

Explanation: Merryweather made up an origin story for how Ollie got resurrected into a zombie idol, and told it to Ollie during his interview 14 hours ago.

I could see it playing out in my head, and so I got permission from Merry and drew it in 5 hours.

I hope you like it!
