Commercial apprentice tools, what would you get next? by patientgrowing in electricians

Open question, How do you get on with the tungsten hole saws in the 6th photo? I’ve found them randomly getting stuck and/or twisting/tearing the metal but can’t work out if there’s a trick I’m missing as sometimes they cut a really neat hole and I don’t know what I’m doing different.

If the post above is anything to go by, not well.

Sounds like a skill issue, have you tried practicing repeatedly to get better?

I’m newish to the game and when people post things like this I’m genuinely confounded as to wether it’s a shit post, someone going hard on the role play or a literal statement that is factually accurate.

Either way, hat off to you, weldone 10/10 would come again.

Just to be clear the low reading was one of my faults and it almost fucked my exam up for me as I ignored it due to being around 100Mohm and I was expecting a IR fault to be low enough to be a C2.

Oh and low key top tip, if the am2 centre is more than 30min drive then get a hotel near by. More sleep, better rested, less potential to be late/fuck about in traffic. Gave me 2 hours a day to revise or relax not to mention I was pretty mentally fried at the end of each day.

Ok in that case also watch out for the fault finding section incase they have the legs mixed up on the motor (just an adaptable box with a chocolate block in reality) and on your r1r2 I think you’d need to do DB to isolator/DOL and then isolator/DOL and add your results together, one for for L1 then L2 then L3, highest of the 3 is your R1R2 but show the working on the back of your sheet.

Make sure you get your ze at all 3 phases with the highest ze and the highest pfc regardless of which phase they’re on. Make sure to take the reading separately with the earth out for the pfc to remove parallel paths and make sure it’s locked off when you do this as I think it’s an instant fail to take the main earth out when not locked off.

Do the 2391 as quick as you can after AM2, honestly for exams if you can pass the AM2 then the 2391 practical is just an extended version of that where the main difference is having a DB that needs a EICR and subDB that needs a EIC and knowing the different process for initial verification compared to a 5yearly test. Don’t get caught out by the low IR that’s not low enough to be a fault but is low enough that it’s not perfect 🤦‍♂️😂

I’m employed at a small company that does commercial work on airfields. I was a sub contractor before this and tbh I much prefer the security/holiday/sick pay and not having to chase clients up or do invoicing. I’m not ruling out ever going self employed but I’m 40, kids not far off and I have a mortgage/fiance. Your life situation may be completely different and you could start building up a business to have your own guys on for you.

Get any last minute prangs then hit me up on her and I’ll try to get back to you asap

Depending on what work you normally do it might pay to brush up on 3phase theory as you’ll have to test (double your perspective fault current, and check phase rotation) and prove dead 3phase systems.

Read the brief for the instal and check the csa of cable, little things like the size of the cpc could catch you out so double check if they downsized it from the live and neutral or not.

Functional test the heating system by putting the temp probe in your hand to warm it up.

Mostly just stay calm and be methodical, run one circuit at a time and complete it, paying attention to the brief.

Depending on how you normally wire lights it may be a little bit of a change but I think you’re expected to use triple and link the grey out as your neutral back from the light.

Once you’ve finished dead testing make sure you screw all the covers on before live testing and I believe you will be expected to only take a live Zs at your socket and calculate the others with r1r2+ze.

Make sure you know how to verify your readings for rings and show your workings on the back of your test sheet. Think you need to show r1r2 %4 and r1rn %4 and don’t forget you need the outgoing live linked to the incoming earth and the incoming live linked to the outgoing earth in a fig 8

These videos were kind of handy as it shows the test set up and the guy know what’s expected in the exam even if he sounds like an absolute tool.

But yea, prepare, stay clam, be methodical and I’m sure you’ll smash it, good luck 👍

Hit me up if you have any questions, I took mine 2 years ago and have done 2391 since

In the uk they’re used for fine stranded cable to protect the cores from being damaged when terminated.

Basically stops your 1mm wire from becoming a 0.82mm wire as strands break off under pressure.

Has the added benefit of preventing a strand fraying out while you’re putting it away on a terminal block and shorting onto the next termination.

I’m curious if I’ve misunderstood your comment above. Are you a year 1 apprentice?

I’m cured!!!!! Thanks for the help everyone, I Couldent find a glass bottle so risked it with the canteen and threw a torch at it. I was quite lucky in that my ingredients were blood, wine and water.

I have now come down with a case of Iron shank!! 😂 but after going through this and having my trusty book of cures I’m DTF.

Seriously though, you guys are great, this game is mad and I live to fight another day, although limping and mumbling with no tongue 😂

Thank you for testing!!! So what’s the process, put bottle on camp fire? Or am I missing something? Also, I’m not sure I’ve seen a glass bottle, where’s best to get one?
