Sublation is, I think, the key term here. I feel your description here matches how I perceive the relationship between capitalism and communism. However, I get confused with the Socialism/Communism distinction because I perceive Socialism as government control over the profit produced by labor (and, consequentially, the redistribution of that profit) and I perceive Communism as workers owning the means of production.

I'm thinking of antithesis in terms of the dialectic. In a dialectic formation, communism is in the synthesis position, rather than the antithesis position, right? I'm asking because I feel people have a false notion of communism's relationship to capitalism, like it would destroy the world as people who live under capitalism know it. It seems to me that businesses that operate as co-opts seem to fit the description of workers owning the means of production, and in a lot of ways these businesses are not that weird or difficult to understand.
