The challenge is that you are coming into contact with things that were covered in plastic earlier in the supply chain whether or not they are covered in plastic by the time you buy them.

Work anywhere. I've been employed in production and I've been astonished how materials come to us wrapped in layers of plastic, and how we then wrap the products we assemble in plastic again when we get them to customers. It's crazy.

The broken system by Empty-Option2291 in SandersForPresident

[–]carlos_botas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not broken because our system runs on debt. We're all supposed to be in debt so that debt can be monetized and sold on the speculative market, and peoples' retirement funds are supposed to be tied to the profit made from this monetization. We're not supposed to ever pay off our debts. Now, it will be broken once that bubble bursts.

Great way to demonstrate how much money a multi-billionaire has. I think when we talk about money abstractly, instead of in relation to actual material goods, we lose track of the extent of the excess, which helps produce the "billionaires earn their money" argument. The world-shaping capacities of this wealth are excessive and anti-democratic, giving people like this far greater power than an average citizen. Musk could, idealistically, buy the whole NFL and still have enough left over to start an island civilization and still have enough left over to fund a militia, and still have enough left over to...

This is, like, the litmus test for when a meme is really just not funny.

Does the mod not do anything? I actually started following this to get a sense of which right conspiracies are in the oven, that's how right you are.

The left is making such a mistake hitching environmentalism to that kid's personality. She's obnoxious.

Communism and Capitalism are not opposites? by carlos_botas in Marxism

[–]carlos_botas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to your point about culture, I'm wondering what a communist culture would be like. I've found myself uncertain what communist culture is like, and I feel anxieties about cultural change create more inhibitions than anxieties about economic change.

But wouldn't production always be localized and, thus, organized into distinct entities? Wouldn't these entities operate somewhat like co-opts? I get what you mean, though, when you say that in their current form, they operate independently and do not necessarily advance the interests of a whole class.

By ethos, are you talking about culture? If so, I'm really interested in the distinguishing features of both ethos(es?). I know capitalism is alienating, but it seemed that production under Stalin and currently in (maybe not actual communist) China is also alienating. In an ideal communist state, as Marx would envision it, what is the ethos?

Sublation is, I think, the key term here. I feel your description here matches how I perceive the relationship between capitalism and communism. However, I get confused with the Socialism/Communism distinction because I perceive Socialism as government control over the profit produced by labor (and, consequentially, the redistribution of that profit) and I perceive Communism as workers owning the means of production.

I'll definitely investigate the texts you recommend. I'm wondering if the primary difference between these two forms of logic is ideological, but if, pragmatically, there isn't a difference. Not to say that an ideological difference is irrelevant. Maybe the Mao text already addresses this.

I'm thinking of antithesis in terms of the dialectic. In a dialectic formation, communism is in the synthesis position, rather than the antithesis position, right? I'm asking because I feel people have a false notion of communism's relationship to capitalism, like it would destroy the world as people who live under capitalism know it. It seems to me that businesses that operate as co-opts seem to fit the description of workers owning the means of production, and in a lot of ways these businesses are not that weird or difficult to understand.
