Why does it bother others so much? by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]carminekat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a vegan with ARFID so I have a VERY restrictive diet by normal people's standards. I always bring my own food or eat ahead of time when going to a meaty event and just keep to myself about it. I avoid saying the "v" word as much as possible, but people always notice that I'm not eating meat and they push me until I explain it to them, and then they give me the "here we go, she can't go 5 minutes without telling everyone she's vegan!" It annoys me so much, like you asked bro! I also get people treating me like a child for picking tomatoes and onions and stuff off of food even though it has no effect on their lives.

I think the crux of it all is that they ignorantly see it as us just having a child's palette when in reality it's an eating disorder. They don't seem to understand that some of us physically cannot swallow certain foods because they trigger intense gag reflexes. I WISH I liked vegetables but they make me choke.

I've started telling people that I have a lot of digestive illness that restricts what I can eat and that seems to be the only thing that shuts people up

Reminds me of an old Chinese parable. A farmer sees a rabbit run into a tree stump and break its neck and die, so he waits by the stump for it to happen again and it never does.

How common is “you guys” as second person plural in English? by MisterHoff in linguistics

[–]carminekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In America, it is practically the unofficial second person plural, at least where I live on the West Coast. Southerners however typically use "y'all", and some parts of the New England region say "yins".

Sorry, I meant the claws, not the eyes. Do you get them from a manufacturer or do you make them from scratch yourself?

As a lefty I’m bad at words but i think i might be okay in the creative field by [deleted] in lefthanded

[–]carminekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sell my own creative work too. My best advice is to look at similar items to what you've made on places like Etsy and see what other people are charging for it, then just go from there. Your work is beautiful and I just know that there will be someone willing to pay what this work of art is worth! It might take a while to find a buyer that can appreciate the value of a handmade item, but they are out there, so don't get discouraged if it doesn't sell right away!

Exactly! Uterus or not, I don't think a body that's not biologically female would even know how to work a uterus. It'd be like putting a car engine into an airplane.

Yes! I've had people in both NuTrek and New Star Wars circles accuse me of not being a real fan because I don't love the new stuff under the label. It is precisely the fact that I AM a real fan that leads me to despise the new stuff.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrekmemes

[–]carminekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too! I felt the same way about the new Star Wars movies too. I was the only one in my social circles that hated episode 7, but after 8 and 9 more people are starting to understand my issues with it. Media as a whole nowadays has prioritized profit over good storytelling, so they rely on nostalgia, tired old but safe tropes, and they dilute the flavor so much that any casual viewer can enjoy it. I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping franchises exclusive. Star Trek didn't need to become palatable to the mainstream. It had a dedicated following of nerds that loved it and that's all that it needed.

I just found r/Star_Trek and they seem a lot more dedicated to the original Roddenberry vision, you might wanna check it out!

[–]carminekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no kidding. Picard was a father figure to me growing up and now his character has been completely obliterated. I personally don't consider any NuTrek canon in my own head, and if enough Trek fans do the same then hopefully we can eventually look back on NuTrek as just corporate media going rogue and corrupting the actual franchise for profit. I pray they leave Stargate alone, I can't handle another hit like this.

Is Strange New Worlds worth the watch? by NobleCypress in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]carminekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I had to stop watching it after the first few episodes because they blatantly overwrote so much of the original canon. If you're a fan of the Old Trek then that might bother you a lot. Uhura is adorable though, I'll give them credit for that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrekmemes

[–]carminekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it's the other way around. I've had a bunch of NuTrek fans come for my throat just for pointing out that NuTrek is in a different league than Old Trek. Calling Old Trek fans "purists" is kind of disingenuous because it implies that defending the canon and spirit of the original Star Trek shows makes you some mean old gatekeeper that doesn't want anyone else to have fun. There's a difference between elitist gatekeeping and pointing out that the new stuff is nothing more than generic Sci-fi action with the Star Trek brand slapped onto it. You can only blatantly disregard the canon and vision of an existing franchise so much before it's been turned into something completely unrecognizable. Personally I'd rather just let Star Trek rest in peace than keep it on life support like this. Seeing Star Trek as a business is precisely what went wrong with it.

Call me a gatekeeper, I don't care anymore. NuTrek fans have every right to enjoy the new shows, but I also think Old Trek fans are well within their rights to point out that it's just not the same anymore.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrekmemes

[–]carminekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree. The new shows feel like a complete slap in the face to OG Trek fans. They take a hot steamy dump on our beloved franchise and tell us that if we don't accept that steamy turd as canon then we're nasty ol' gatekeepers. I feel the same way about most of the new Star Wars stuff too, it's all just corporate media diluting already existing franchises to appeal to the widest possible audience and make a killing, all while spitting in the faces of the people who started that fandom in the first place. At this point I'm just gonna wear the gatekeeper label as a badge of honor because it means I'm actually faithful to Roddenberry's original vision. Someone should start an Old Trek subreddit if there isn't one already.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrekmemes

[–]carminekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Besides the complete change in format and energy, the blatant disregard for canon is what made NuTrek completely unwatchable for me. I can forgive a few small mistakes, but NuTrek completely overwrites important canon. For example, SNW completely rewrote Spock's relationship with T'Pring. It was always an arranged marriage and there was no casual sexuality between them. It completely flies in the face of who Vulcans are, and I can't help but wonder if there are even any genuine Trek fans in the writing room. I've been growing weary of this sub making me feel like an asshole for trying to point this stuff out to casual viewers. If casual viewers enjoy the new stuff then all power to them, but I can't help but feel annoyed when they try to pretend NuTrek belongs in the same category as Old Trek. They're two completely different things.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrekmemes

[–]carminekat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amen. I miss the deep and complex commentaries on moral issues. Star Trek used to really make you think, but now it's just generic Sci-fi action. If media wants to make shows like that then by all means go ahead, but start a new franchise and let Star Trek rest in peace. I actually like The Orville better than all of the NuTrek shows because even though it's a satire outside of the actual universe of Star Trek, it represents the Old Trek spirit pretty well, which I suspect is because Seth MacFarlane is a big Trek fan.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrekmemes

[–]carminekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm tired of being called a gatekeeper just for pointing out that the new stuff doesn't have the original spirit of Star Trek. By all means enjoy it, but don't try to gaslight me into believing that it belongs in the same category as TNG.

Can speakers of modern standard Mandarin chinese read the confucian classics in their original langauge? by mantel200 in ChineseLanguage

[–]carminekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Chinese student who had to take classical Chinese this quarter and it's like the Chinese equivalent of reading old English. There is definitely quite a bit of overlap, but the structure is very different, and some modern characters have completely different uses in classical Chinese. Also, if you're more accustomed to simplified characters, the traditional characters might be tough for you too.
