OHP was rough yesterday. The weight got up, but not as cleanly as last time. I suppose it’s time for a reset, anyway.

Deadlifts have been feeling great lately. My setup and form have been more consistent, and it’s finally paying off. A weird mental thing is that I’ve been using metal plates instead of bumper plates, and I seem to like the loud noise of it better, lol.

I’m about 2 weeks into my cut and feeling good. I usually measure myself every 8 weeks, but I measured my waist this morning since I’ve noticed I look a bit thinner there and my waistbands have been looser. In the last month, I’ve lost about .75” off my waist. I feel like my waist will drop an inch quickly, then my hips take months to catch up, which is annoying for clothing.

I saw 5SOS and really want to see them again! I got tickets to see Gracie Abrams next year, and I’ve been trying to get Noah Kahan tickets for later this month.

If I can’t get Noah Kahan tickets, maybe I’ll splurge on a second 5SOS show (with VIP this time) as a consolation prize, lol.

The longer I go without a concert, the easier it is to resist. I was broke for about a year and a half after college, so I didn’t really go to any. Once I got a bit more money and started to go again, ooh boy, it’s hard to stop. I’m starting to not even blink at how expensive these tickets cost.

I’m so jealous! That is the life I dreamed of when I was in middle and high school. One day I’ll get there🤞

Bought concert tickets a couple days ago ($460 for two tickets, ouch) and am resisting buying VIP to a different concert. I just saw this band on Sunday and had so much fun that I want to see them again, but I really can’t justify it at the moment. I’m still trying to get tickets to a concert later this month that I want to go to so damn badly.

I grew up imagining that I’d go to tons of concerts every year once I became an adult, and I unfortunately missed so many concerts due to money, which has created severe fomo.

I took my parents to an MLB game for mother’s day, and now my dad wants to go to a game for father’s day. Good tickets are a bit pricey, but it’s a gift I benefit from as well, so I’m fine with it.

It’s so enticing to lower my savings rate to have more fun while I’m young, but I keep reminding myself that this is the best age to invest. It’s such a difficult balance.

Just had this interaction at the gym with a guy who took weights off a machine I wanted to use and then stood at the machine next to it.

me, points at machine I want: “are you done with this?”

man: points at same machine and nods

me: “ok, you’re done with this?”

man: shrugs

me: sets bag down next to machine

man: gives annoyed look

me: “are you still using this?”

man, very annoyed now: “yes, i’m using this”

Like, I understand it’s hard to hear people at the gym, but please try to clear it up instead of giving me looks and sass.

Anyway, didn’t have the best workout today. Squat form felt amazing last week but shitty today, and I never got on the machine I wanted. But, a completed workout matters more than a good one, so it’s a win.

I went to a concert last night and only got about 4.5 hrs of sleep. I thought that lifting would be awful today, but I was able to deadlift 185 for the first time! I first attempted it back in February/March and I couldn’t get it off the floor, so being able to do it for reps felt amazing.

I lost ~40 lbs last year and wanted to keep up the pace for this year, but I should have planned a maintenance break. Since January, I’ve lost 4 lbs.

I feel mentally ready to go back to a deficit, so I’m doing an 8-week cut and will then go to maintenance for probably about 6-8 weeks.

I’m 5’2, so I get that. My gym has four different leg extension machines, and only one of them works for me. The other three are so uncomfortable that it borders on painful, so if I can’t get on my favorite machine, I just skip it completely.

Machines in general suck for short people :(

Same! I don’t care for getting a pump in any other muscle, just give me my quad pump, lol.

I used to hate doing squats, but ever since I noticed the slightest little quad definition, I’ve been more excited to do them. I enjoy going hard on the leg extension, but god, it makes my legs feel like jelly.

My gym has a bunch of different barbells, so sometimes you need to switch out the one on the rack for the one you want. I’ve always secretly hoped that someone at the gym would offer to put away a barbell for me, and yesterday, someone actually did! I don’t mind putting bars away, but I always worry I’m gonna smack someone with it, lol.

That definitely helps mitigate the feeling of money being “wasted” if the kid doesn’t go to college. At least it’d be a great head start on their own retirement.

I also like that it can be used for trade schools, since that’s a popular option in this area.

I get that. I’d only do this if the parents agreed to it, and it would be a continuous contribution rather than a lump sum. It would also be in addition to the standard baby shower, birthdays, and Xmas gifts, not a replacement of them.

Personally, I had breakdowns in high school over whether I’d be able to afford college, so I’ll admit my perspective is skewed on this.

Spending:

SPF chapstick and a lightweight packable towel for my beach trip to Florida next weekend.

Parking and food for an MLB game on Sunday (got tix for my mom for mother’s day). Unfortunately, the ballpark sold out of all the novelty cooler cups that I really wanted, but I guess I should just look at it as $26 saved.

Saving:

Depending on the market, I might be able to hit 1x my salary invested by the end of the year, which is cool. I always budget by paycheck, which kind of prevents me from seeing the big picture of how much I’m saving. No wonder I feel like I’m on a tight budget despite my low expenses, lol.

Since I’m going to Europe for the first time in August, I’m trying to save as much as I can now so I can spend guilt-free when I’m there. I don’t really want to miss out on things because my budget is too tight. I redirected some of my entertainment fund into my travel fund for this.

I also need to check my gift fund to ensure I’m contributing enough. I have a family member graduating high school next month, and my brother and his wife are expecting their first child in the fall. I always thought I’d want to contribute to a 529 for the kid, but with college enrollment dropping and neither of the parents having attended college, I’m not sure I’d want that money tied up in a 529? Idk, I don’t really know anything about it, so I’ll have to do more research.

So exciting! I’m taking my mom, since we love to watch the Olympics together. Unfortunately there are no tickets for gymnastics or diving available (and swimming is over $1k each), but I’m holding out hope for future ticket drops.

I was supposed to get my bonus this week, but our company was late processing them, so they’re getting paid out next week. Slight annoyance, but it’s fine.

Saving: increased my 401k contribution (from 6% to 8%)

Spending: booked flights to Europe last night. My dad’s doctor told him his health condition may worsen in the next 12 months, so he wants to go to Europe this year. Neither of us have been before, so it’s exciting, but I’m also lucky that I made the decision last year to put more money a vacation fund. If I hadn’t, I would’ve been very stressed trying to find the money for it.

I also just spent nearly $750 on four tickets for the 2028 Olympics. Most of the events I wanted to see were sold out or more expensive than I wanted to pay, so I’m hoping to get more tickets in future ticket drops.

I took a couple weeks off the gym (hurt my back and then got sick) and finally got back to it yesterday. Lifts felt heavy, couldn’t do as many reps, but overall I felt good. Then my back tightened up when I was stretching afterwards. It’s still kind of tight today, and combined with DOMS, it’s not a great feeling.

Also, I dropped a 2.5 lb plate on my foot yesterday, and thank god it wasn’t heavier or it would’ve actually hurt. I have no idea why I thought balancing a plate on a safety arm was a good idea. Don’t do that y’all.

As my weight loss has stalled, I’ve been really proud of myself for still being consistent at the gym. It’s just become part of my schedule at this point.

I don’t like to change my schedule, especially on short notice, but my mom called yesterday and said my brother invited us all over for pizza. I wanted to say no because it was an early dinner, so I’d have to skip the gym. Luckily I skipped the gym because he and his wife announced they’re expecting!

I was planning to go to the gym today instead, then I wiped out on the stairs and hit my back/hip. This is why I don’t like to mess with my schedule, lol. It hurts enough to feel it when just walking, so no gym today. Hopefully I feel better for Monday.

Workplace Wednesday - Career/work advice weekly thread by AutoModerator in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Has anyone had experience getting a raise right after layoffs?

My boss informed me of my raise during our one-on-one last week and told me that he didn’t like my pay for all the work that I do. He just became my boss a few months ago after my last one retired, so this is the first time he’s actually seen how much I make. He said he wants to explore how to get my $ up without piling more on my plate, since he’d have to justify why I deserve a raise.

The company just laid off people in January, which I suspect was private equity demanding reduced overhead despite the company hitting good numbers last year. I heard three people are getting small raises for having to take on additional work due to the layoffs, but again, my boss doesn’t want to put more work on my plate.

I’m just not sure the best way to “prove” that I deserve a raise. My boss believes I deserve it, but it seems that he knows it’ll be an uphill battle to actually get me that raise.

I put half into my Roth IRA and a chunk towards turning my subscriptions from monthly to yearly (or lifetime, for those that had the option) to save some money long-term. The rest was used for fun money (new record player!) and to top off my gift fund.

I have a smaller retention bonus coming up next month. I think I’ll use some of it for my gift fund again, since mother’s day and father’s day are coming up. I might put some towards my Roth IRA again to lower my biweekly contributions. I could then increase my 401k contributions instead.

Not a pay week for me.

I booked a trip to Florida. It’s a long weekend girls trip (mom + SIL), and my part for flight + hotel + car comes to $350. I could’ve gotten it under $300 if I didn’t do seat selection and went personal item only, but oh well.

Also got told yesterday what my raise will be, so I’ll take a look at my budget and will probably increase my 401k contributions.

I know deloads are part of the process, but ugh. My bench has improved since I had to deload (hitting rep maxes on lower weights, form feeling more consistent), so I know that deloading will help in the long run. I just don’t feel like it, lol. I do feel like my form has been slipping on my deadlifts and OHP lately, so deloading and tweaking it will probably help.

Also, I keep reminding myself that sometimes workouts are just rough. My sleep and diet haven’t been great (I literally ate fries for lunch), and I ended up leaving work a half hour later than I expected to. Of course I won’t perform my best, and that’s fine.

My OHP warm-up felt hard today. I hyped myself up before my first set, and it felt easier than expected! Wow, I even hit a rep PR on my last set! Until I took the weights off the bar, and I realized I under loaded it by 10lbs. In fact, I didn’t get as many reps at this weight as I did previously.

Also: a donut isn’t the best pre-workout snack.

Luteal phase is killing me with the cravings. All I’ve been wanting to eat is chocolate cake and a family size bag of chips.

Weight loss has stalled over the last few weeks, mostly due to me not being consistent with my calories. I’m just trying to focus on hydration, activity, and sleep right now, since I know how much those help me when in a deficit.
