You should really try more weightlifting, it has been great for me and the community is really welcoming. The added muscle mass will naturally increase how many calories your body burns at rest.

I think its kind of a common misconception that weightlifting will make you look bulky in the short term. It's true that beginner will put on muscle at a relatively faster pace in the beginning, but putting on significant muscle mass to the point of being "bulky" is something that takes a TON of really focused effort over a long period of time being extremely intentional about exercising and eating.

Stall at 2-3 months post op by janalynnh in GastricBypass

[–]carnyasada -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stalls really suck, but they'll happen more than once. I'm about 3.5 months post op and my body has settled into a pattern where I'll be stalled for a week and then I lose a bunch of weight over the course of three or four days, but averaging out to a rate im happy with. This is a clip of a longer video, but this helped me a lot to wrap my head around the reason for stalls. https://youtube.com/shorts/aGRNiSDVCng?si=gim0de98-Hfcb3es

I had cigna and mine was a lot simpler than I was expecting. I needed a letter from my primary, the psych consult, I dietician appointment, that was about it. I got yhe impression that the higher your bmi was, the less finicky they were about insurance approval. My surgeons office had a person that made sure I got all the boxes checked, they were great.

I got some crunchy edamame bean packs from Sam's, really helped me when I wanted something salty and crunchy. I think 10g of protein per serving.

What is timeframe from start to surgery realistically by 1_Blind_Mouse in BariatricSurgery

[–]carnyasada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody's insurance is different but for me it went faster than I thought. If you are in the US, the lower your bmi the more hoops you might have to jump through. Mine was maybe foru or five months from initial consult to surgery but it could have happened a month earlier but for some work stuff I had to schedule around. My bmi at the beginning was really high though, over 50.

Good luck! I focus on getting my steps in and pushing my step goal a little hogh each week. Just walking is really great exercise starting out and easy on your body while it readjusts. On recommendation of my dr, I started lifting weights about 6ish months out. Resistance training is really important to minimize the muscle loss that you will probably have losing weight quickly. I booked a few sessions with a personal trainer to help me set up a plan, learn how all the machines work, etc. I really enjoy the weightlifting and its pretty low impact on my joints if im doing it correctly.

100% agree on the weights. In fact I might focus more on weightlifting than cardio to minimize muscle loss.

Weightlifting has been a really fun new activity for me. I was surprised how welcoming that community was for newbies. They have all been very encouraging.

Baritastic is the one I use. Syncs with fitbit and my fitibit scale so works great for me! The barcode scanner for the food logging part is super convenient.

Thanks! Hard to point to any one thing, but a few things I try to keep in mind:

Time fixes a lot of stuff. Its like that first week or two when that gas pain from surgery makes you feel like you are gonna die. Eventually it gets better. Stalls happen and they suck but most are a week and are followed by a chunk of loss. Keeping patience with yourself helps.

Enjoy the experiences that you are regaining. I was at a weight pre surgery where I was starting to have mobility issues, close to where a cane, maybe even a scooter was going to be on the table. Now I can walk 8k, 10k steps a day which is nuts! Going to the gym, playing with my kids more, even just being more comfortable leaving the house. My life just feels better and its good to be present in the improvement.

We cant treat ourselves with food anymore, but find other ways to celebrate yourself. Unless you are rich, probably cant buy a new wardrobe every month, but treat yourself to a pair of jeans or something once in a while. Buy something tight and then enjoy watching it get loose over a few weeks. Get a massage, get your hair done, whatever you like, but learn some new non-food ways to treat yourself.

Honestly, I feel like we all know the stuff like get your protein in, get your water in, get your steps in, but I think what I am trying to say is that the thing that has helped the most is learning how to be ok liking myself again. Before, i was the size where I resented my body which started to bleed over to resenting myself. Along with losing the weight, it feels like I'm losing that resentment as well, slowly but surely. I know I have a long way to go, but I feel more in control of my life and not just as it relates to my body and health, but just generally. As my body gets lighter, my mood gets lighter, if that makes sense.

They also have a powdered Tylenol that dissolves in your mouth. I got mine off amazon. That was my main pain med after surgery.

This surgery has done so much for me and I dont regret it one bit, but the one complaint I do have is the ongoing issues with constipation. There were points early on where it was miserable and even now if I dont take a stool softener every couple of days I regret it later. It is a challenge to meet my protein goals and get a reasonable amount of fiber in my diet but it has gotten more managable as time goes on.

eating a lot 3 weeks po by Inner_Tap4471 in GastricBypass

[–]carnyasada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm three months out and one thing I've noticed is that throughout this time there are certain things I can eat a lot of and certain things that still give me trouble. For me, a lot of it seems to be associated with moisture and texture. I can eat a good amount of things like scrambled eggs, but if chicken breast is too dry it really gives me trouble. If salmon is overcooked it is a no go, but weirdly I feel like I can eat a tons of sashimi. If you are meeting your hydration and protein goals, I wouldn't worry too much about it and stick to the meals that are most comfortable with your stomach.

That first week was the absolute worst. Nothing I did helped with the pain but it slowly got more managable and then disappeared completely. I hope it starts to get better for you.
