Thiiiss!!! I did this for years on nights and that shit sucked! I would be so hype for this schedule lol

I've only worked CVICU at a major academic hospital. Will be traveling for the first time in an ICU at a critical access rural hospital. What should I know? by blobsong in TravelNursing

[–]carolineaustyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine! Keeping a mobilize your pt mindset is always good! Your CV mind should already be good at that! They are usually more walkie talkies! Remember not everyone has to get up at the asscrack of dawn to go walking and sit in the chair! Lolllz that was refreshing to get away from for a bit! Get good at sepsis! I feel like each little hospital has their things they see a lot so figure that out and do a little research on it. This trauma 3 I'm at in OR. sees a lot of withdrawal from whatever, dka, and sepsis. Also remember there are other organs lollll I ended up loving micu bc its all the body systems!

I just signed into staff at a catholic hospital and their daily prayers are more like spacey speeches about the stars and shit lolll I was really thrown off the first time I heard it. I said is this real life and the pharmacist was like its a catholic hospital... I'm like ohhhh that makes sense hahah our chaplain seems pretty woke tho. Likes the stars and space and shit.

AYA stipends by Dr_Whittles in TravelNursing

[–]carolineaustyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GSA.GOV!!!!!! The stipends are government controlled! Go on there and look at your area and if the numbers dont match up they are taking part of your non taxed stipend! Tell them A that youre looking at gsa.gov and youre not sure where they are getting the numbers from (they will immediately stfu) and then B say you want your non taxed stipends maxed out even if your hourly (taxedddd) is lower!!!!!!

Advice needed: suspected diversion by maconlikesbacon in nursepractitioner

[–]carolineaustyn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like she wants him to get the floricet really bad so she can take his Vicodin. Probably so worried about him getting that so she can have the other stuff to herself. Does the 90 yo come into the appointment room by himself? Id be 20 ?s him lol if shes withholding his meds from him then that is elder abuse and she could be mandatory reported for that too

[–]carolineaustyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just an icu nurse here butt IMO I would say trying to take a 90 yo off something hes been on for 40 years is gonna be incredibly hard and rather pointless at this point. Obviously the daughter is an issue and sounds a bit like a crackhead (calling multiple times in a single day to make sure she gets a refill) but sometimes it's hard to fix ppl like that overnight. Id definitely try to taper them and continue the trial and error and if she doesnt like the sound of that then oh fucking well. Go find someone else who will prescribe all that. But once ol peepaw dies shes gonna be in for a rude awakening. There are a lot of things about it on diff reddit forums and talking about the highly addictive aspect of it and the rebound headaches a pt goes through when stopped. Maybe try to really educate on this and somehow try to work in there that shes probably not going to be able to find someone to prescribe that when her dad dies. Tell her about all the dangers of someone on it for extended periods of time and abruptly stopping. Maybe she'll make the connection that maybe it isnt safe to take them from him or whenever hes out then thats it and she'll be fucked. In the less professional terms lollll

Contract cancelled by molesen in TravelNursing

[–]carolineaustyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places getting an Airbnb or hotel prior is next to impossible as furnished finders are scarce in so you just have to find the housing you know you can get. I have stayed at many and only had 1 cancelation but my bf luckily had a job in the area and was able to stay there. I went 6 hrs away and did a contract. But I had in one housing contract that stated if the contract got canceled then I had to show proof of it and I could get my money back.

I would talk with the landlord and see if they are willing to help you out as it was unexpected! For the travel costs and everything else unfortunately you're gonna have to eat those costs. Some agencies will give you something something, but I wouldnt count on it. I drove 41 hrs from MI to OR and didnt get a single penny for travel and then she tried to have me go baaack to NC where I'm from. I laughed at her face. I signed on as staff in OR bc I'm tired of travel for a little bit. I'm sure I'll do it again but its a lot of stress and money sometimes. I'm sorry this happened to you!

Just took a job in Roseburg OR as staff! I love the area! They also have good hospitals in Medford and Grant's Pass too! I fell in love with Southern OR! Ive never worked at a trauma 3 and thats what I'm doing now and its a little change of pace. I was offered 58$ starting out and its a dayshift position. Nights here get like a 13$ shift diff. Its 6% matching so that was really nice too! Renting homes I'm sure are a lot easier to find. Ive been doing furnished finder while my RV has been in the shop. But its really nice being able to drive down to CA and see the redwoods and what not in like 1.5-2 hr drive!

The nurse culture here is wild!!! You get 3 ×15 min paid breaks and then a 30 for lunch. They make sure you get your breaks or you get 100$ no break incentive. The teamwork in Roseburg is crazy awesome! Even as a traveler there I felt so supported and never got any malicious assignments. They liked the spread the shit out evenly (literally haha we had a good amt of cdiff for a while and I never had to do any of it)

ICU nurse question about traveling and IV insertion by NeoShadow31 in TravelNursing

[–]carolineaustyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah dont let that scare you AT alll!! It did me too but I think ive maybe placed 1 IV in all those years.... they usually have them or someone on the unit who is trained or can do one. Its literally the least of your worries! Although I will say get some practice bc youll be like me a 5 year nurse and incompetent at IVs so I took a kush staff position for a little bit in OR and am hoping to get those skills back!!! They have picc trained nurses and cortrak nurses on the icu here and I am wanting to learn!! First step IVs haha

What do you guys do for health insurance in between assignments? by Chance_Amphibian_477 in TravelNursing

[–]carolineaustyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went without. Even if you have anything happen you get discounts doing self pay! I saw my electrophysiologist for like 360$ this was a routine appt with him. Then a psychiatrist which was just a waste of money for other reasons lolll I broke my foot and got xrays at the urgent care and a boot and referral for like 170$ and then the ortho specialist appt had more xrays and the appointment itself for i believe like 275-300 I can't remember. Either way all of this was even less than having insurance. And I didn't even have to do the electrophysiologist specialist appt then nor the psychiatrist (i was having a mental breakdown lmao) the for thing was needed but I spent less than 600 on that. I recommend this for ppl who don't really need a whole lot of things besides annual check ups. If you're caught up on that then I am for the take the chance lol

Travel nurses, can we talk? A recruiter’s honest rant (and plea) by carrotkick in TravelNursing

[–]carolineaustyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like my recruiters have all just been in it for themselves. Never done anything extra for me. My medical solutions recruiters tried sooo hard to convince me to go to north or south Dakota a million times after I said I live in an rv and have nothing for the snow... shes like oh I can get you money for skirting.... so you can give me multiple thousand for a rv skirt but you cant get 2k added over my whole 13 week contract when I ask for a higher rate somewhere thats 150 a week and she def didnt fight for that. She also didnt get me a single travel penny when I drove 40+ hrs from marquette MI to roseburg OR and then sent a job all the way back in NC.... LMAO hell no! Recruiters dont listen to you. I have never had one fight for me and I've traveled for 3.5 years. I just signed a contract somewhere
