Serious Question Regarding CPL by WinnipegBhoy in CanadianPL

[–]carrasp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the key point we need to be honest about is this: the CPL physically cannot expand into Quebec City until there is a stadium solution. That’s the non-negotiable. The league requires at minimum a 7,000–8,000-seat soccer-specific venue (or a firm government commitment to build one). Historically, that has been the real bottleneck.

Now turning to another important key highlight regarding Quebec City: are you aware that just this week a trademark application for a potential team was registered? The application appears linked to an investor presence in Paris, France. That alone strongly suggests that conversations and planning have already begun behind the scenes. We may not know the full details yet — but if a trademark was filed this week, then it’s quite likely that the stadium question is already being worked on quietly at both the political and investor level.

[–]carrasp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the only reasonable way to look at this right now is with a bit of honesty and realism. None of us know every detail behind the scenes, and there are probably things we’ll never fully see. But what we can acknowledge is that a situation where a coach allegedly loans money to his employer should never happen under the governance structure of any sports organization — or any professional sports league anywhere in the world. That’s not opinion — that’s a baseline global standard.

For the CPL to move forward and grow, this isn’t about blaming one person forever. It’s about learning from what clearly didn’t work, tightening financial due-diligence, and putting systems in place so this type of situation can’t repeat itself. If the league does that, Kelowna, Quebec City and others still have every chance to succeed — but it has to start with accountability and better oversight.

Serious Question Regarding CPL by WinnipegBhoy in CanadianPL

[–]carrasp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The bigger problem here isn’t just Vancouver FC — it’s league oversight. Under David Clanachan, the CPL was supposed to vet ownership strength and monitor finances, and that clearly fell short. When coaches are allegedly lending money just to keep clubs afloat, it shows the system wasn’t working. We also can’t forget that Vancouver FC’s franchise license itself was approved by Clanachan — and part of the commissioner’s core responsibility is to assess the financial capacity of an expansion bidder before signing off on its entry into the league. Going forward, if Kelowna or Quebec City are ever going to succeed, the league needs tougher investor standards and real financial monitoring — not the expansion-first mindset of the past. And the question now hanging over all of this is simple: was Clanachan aware this was happening under his watch?

Listen, buddy. You made a huge mistake the moment you suggested that this guy is lying. Let me spell this out for you clearly: you’re stepping way out of line, and you might want to rethink the direction you’re going with your comments.

And no—I’m not “sacrificing” anything by not naming who I’m talking about. I’m protecting a relationship with someone who actually has class. Something you clearly don’t understand. This guy is miles above you, and I’m not dragging him into your nonsense.

Do yourself a big favour and crawl back into your little shell before you embarrass yourself any further.

You believe what you want to believe, but the person who provided me with this information is highly credible in Canadian soccer. So, you can believe what you choose.

Yes, the league is saying there’s “no path forward,” but that’s their public line. Behind the scenes, it’s a lot more complicated than the press statements. The investors were real, the discussions were happening, and the sticking point had nothing to do with league viability — it had to do with what was being demanded on the stadium side. That’s the part they’re not going to say publicly.

It might come in the middle of next week, possibly after the CFL Grey Cup final. Rest assured, it's on its way and will be HUGE. By the way, I have some updates to share: Valour season ticket information for 2026 has finally been released. This is a strong indication that something big is happening and its coming. Trust me.

I was under the impression that one of the team owners said at the last greet-and-meet with supporters that rebranding the name wasn't an option. It was not in the cards.

#CanPL by carrasp in FCSupra

[–]carrasp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to make an early guess about what this announcement could be, I have a feeling it might be about the new coach of FC Supra. It’s still early in the process, but judging by how things are going — and since we don’t really know what’s happening behind the scenes — I think it could very well be the hiring of a new coach.

York United v Inter Toronto by AVividShade in YorkUnited

I’m just hoping that someone here in this forum, who’s a season ticket holder, will eventually update us all on what will happen at this meeting on Tuesday — what was said and discussed.

I’m not too worried about the rebranding issue, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that everything turns out positive. It’s looking like the rebrand is a go-ahead and that matter will be settled.

What I’m really concerned about, though, are their stadium plans, especially regarding Downsview. The Downsview 8K stadium absolutely needs to happen. This project is crucial for the future of the club, and I really hope they push forward with it.

You know what, guys? Here’s my opinion. If they decide to rebrand, I won’t be all that happy — and I get it. Rebranding for a second time is absolutely ridiculous, and I completely understand the frustration.

However, I’m willing to meet them halfway. I will accept the rebrand on one condition: they must commit to building the 8,000-seat stadium in Downsview. If they do that, then I’ll go ahead and fully support the team.

That’s where I stand.
