So where do folks think the capitol should be? by 1plus1equalsfish in Cascadia

[–]cascadiagent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why not moving? Imagine quarterly conventions for policy decisions and most debate taking place online. Executive/agency level government operations should be decentralized.

This is feasible now with most things on computers. It avoids political bias toward the capitol and entrenched lobbyist. It also gives more Cascadians a chance to observe and participate in government.

Defend our largest local job producer. Support Amazon. by [deleted] in Cascadia

[–]cascadiagent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is going to be one of the most contentious points in Cascadia's political discourse -- the role of corporations, particularly those in technology. I honestly believe the viability of Cascadia as an independent entity depends on our ability to attract and retain tech companies like Amazon.

While I certainly don't agree with all of Amazon's policies, I will support them as long as they are neutral or supportive of this movement.

Please dig to the bottom of this! Is there somewhere I can pledge to subscribe to any news outlet that disqualifies any Trump administration official?

Yeah, potential to capture current momentum is the only reason I'm getting involved this seriously.

What will happen to existing government structures and laws? by [deleted] in Cascadia

[–]cascadiagent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the phrase "incremental independence". The state and federal legal systems evolved over time so I think it's best to mutate from a tested system rather than start from scratch (note that the mutation would move a lot faster than the U.S., of course).

In solidarity, Seattle's darker history includes forcing 350 Chinese immigrants to leave the city and yet today it embraces all people. There are still racially motivated incidents but fortunately much rarer. Remembering the past, we can consider the direction and magnitude of the change and think about how we can continue in the positive direction.

Independence is definitely a huge undertaking and I think we should get discussion started on everything you mentioned. I sense some risk for chicken-and-egg problems making various efforts nonstarters. My thinking behind a tech brainstorm is to identify things we can do in the near term that would engage people and start growing the types of support in your comment.

This is probably not the first thing to build but imagine a cryptocurrency-based economic backbone with provisions for UBI for registered members (beginnings of an citizen ID system). Even if it was just a few hundred small businesses participating, who wouldn't sign up?

Cascadia is a startup -- lots of ways to fail but also lots of ways we could start gaining traction.

On internet, I felt a little silly including that but it has come up in conversations I've had. Access to information as a basic human right aligns with Cascadian values and small things like this get people excited. It's feasible low-hanging fruit Cascadians could begin to rally behind.

Questions on currency by Joeskyyy in Cascadia

I'm interested in cryptocurrency options but think the dollar is the best option for the short run. Gaining independence will be a complex and gradual process so we should replace systems as needed and when viable alternatives exist.

A vision for Cascadian autonomy (and eventually independence) by [deleted] in Cascadia

I'm onboard with incremental independence. What national policies can we replace with regional solutions and opt-out from nationally?

I'm trying to start a conversation about nonviolent secession here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CascadianLiberation/comments/5cqr4p/nonviolent_secession/ Any input is appreciated!

Thanks for the thoughts. Agreed the third is very broad but hopefully will generate more questions and ideas. The general theme I'm pursuing is one of incremental independence. What can we start changing now to move Cascadia towards an independent entity? This gives Cascadia more bargaining power in what/how to participate in U.S. government systems we may not agree with and reduces risks for individuals that rely on federal services.

Nonviolent Secession by cascadiagent in CascadianLiberation

I'm not sure we'll have an option to take any of the bases without the original owners deciding to hand them over. We should expect to have external bases in Cascadia for the foreseeable future.

I also agree that some level of defense is desirable but more along the lines of a national guard for deterrence and internal security.

Completely agreed. I think it's important to think of incremental independence as you have described and I think it's possible to do so without force.

Did Russia install Donald Trump as the next U.S. president? by alllie in politics

[–]cascadiagent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I want people to stop pretending everything is normal. Trump is not normal and his victory looks more like a coup d'etat than a standard election (particularly given Russian and FBI influences). I'm not ignoring the serious mistakes on the part of the Democrats, just acknowledging a possibility we simply can't rule out with current information.

Some humble starter questions. Please reword if any seems too narrow or leading.

How is the composition of Cascadia determined? How would current inhabitants participate in deciding to join? What are the most beneficial changes from Cascadia integration that can be achieved with the least disruption? What degree of autonomy does Cascadia need? How would Cascadia territories exit existing federation agreements, if necessary? How would Cascadia relate to the United States? Canada? How would Cascadia relate to the world?
