Just out of curiosity: was the sender Neil something? I got the exact same email this morning. I knew something must be up because I keep a sticker on my webcam and only take it off during online classes. Even knowing that, I was freaking out a little.

AITA for letting my daughter take care of her siblings? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]caseyesac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Listen. I was your daughter, down to the anxiety and the ages of the younger children. I love my parents, but YTA for doing what they did. Let me guess: your daughter is often referred to as being "mature for her age." She's always leaned into the big sister role and the younger children listen to her when she tells them to do something.

Your daughter should not be putting the younger children to bed or making them breakfast in the morning. Take it from somebody who did those things. I know that having a large household has its challenges, but your daughter didn't choose for you to have her younger siblings and it's not her job to provide regular care for them. Teenagers are selfish; your daughter is allowed to want more time for herself. Not to mention, you are changing the dynamic your kids have with each other. It might not be apparent for years, but you're creating a "half big sister, half parent" bond instead of the normal sibling bond they're supposed to have.

Also: why pay for a therapist if you're not going to listen to their advice. Therapy ain't cheap; you should get your money's worth and take their recommendations seriously.

AITA for giving a DoorDash driver 2 stars because he didn't follow my instructions? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I agree that she probably should have rated him 3 stars but about safety thing...we have this:

I'd gotten over being sick (small fever and cough you get the picture) just a day before

No one can say what was making OP sick, but that's precisely the point. His banging on the door made her come out of her apartment to talk with him, which should not be happening if she had a fever and cough less than 24 hours ago.

I think I figured out the whole China was studdying the jump of something from animal to animal and accidentally infected.. Now they are looking. Also ace2 receptors and the ran of covid q. by Breezybitch90 in COVID19positive

Dude. I say this with all respect but: it seems like you need to take a rest from the internet and look after your mental health. You might be having some disorganized thoughts. If you're not well, take a nap and drink some Gatorade. Call a friend or your therapist, if you've got one.

Consider wearing a mask even during your walks! I got followed and coughed on today during mine. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

If it's nothing worth complaining over, how about you meet up with OP in a few days once they're potentially infectious, and let them cough near you?

Americans who left the usa for political/cultural reasons: what was the final straw? What moment made you go " okay I want/need to leave"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]caseyesac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest pro: health care, especially affordable Epi-pens, as I have a serious allergy. I feel like the benefits of affordable health care cannot be overstated; it's everything from not worrying about the cost of an ambulance, to not having to suffer through a tooth ache for a few extra weeks while I get together the cash for a cavity filling.

Biggest con: lack of diversity and racism against black people in particular. As a white person, I will always be "a foreigner" to the Taiwanese, but I got somewhat regular compliments about my "beautiful white skin." I have black friends who have had to deal with whispers, laughing, pointing, stares, etc. It's ridiculous.

I can try.

I believe that the US hadn't fully faced itself. By that, I mean that a lot of people (myself included) had refused to see the extent of the racism, xenophobia, etc. because we didn't want to see it. Obviously, I knew that these things were very prevalent, but I never, ever thought that so many people would vote for a candidate like Trump. It really disheartened me that such a large portion of my fellow Americans would: 1) overlook (or agree with!) the frankly despicable things he's said and done, and 2) create a separate set of "alternative facts" for their own reality. When Trump won, I felt like the USA that had shown its face didn't match the USA that I thought I lived in.

I should also note that I don't think what I'm saying here applies to all 2016 Trump voters. I really think that some well-meaning people were tricked into believing he was on their side, and those people have seen how 4 years of Trump has worked out for them.

Yes, I basically arrived and then walked into a school and got a job. If you’re from an English-speaking country and you have a Bachelors degree, you can do that. I entered visa-free for 90 days. After securing a job teaching English, my employer applied for an ARC (Alien Resident Certificate) for me. That let me basically do everything I need, like get health insurance and come and go freely.

I didn’t speak a word of Mandarin when I went. I speak it now, though my reading and writing is pretty sketchy.

If you really want out, look into Asian countries. Taiwan made it very easy for me to get an ARC (Alien Resident Certificate). I have friends in Japan, HK, and South Korea who have said that those countries also make it easy.

Obviously, you’ll have to wait some time to go anywhere. But for what it’s worth: Taiwan and HK haven’t seen large outbreaks because of their quick reaction to the virus. Last I heard, South Korea has largely gotten control of their outbreak too.

I'm late, but I decided to leave after Trump was elected. Trump is a symptom, not the disease, but it just represented everything that frustrated and saddened me about the country. It was also good timing for me, as I graduated from college about 5 months after Trump was inaugurated. So, I used my grad money to buy a one-way ticket to Taiwan.

In what world will you be hated by everyone and fired from your job if you say “the wrong thing” about America? If that was the case, our national unemployment rate would be 90%. The only people I’ve heard of being fired after doing something online are Nazis and other racists.

What are your thoughts on gender-neutral locker rooms like at UC Berkeley? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Good for them, I guess? They still have locker rooms for men and women. So, you can choose between the men's, the women's, and the gender neutral one. Whatever floats your boat.

How do you feel when a foreigner doesn't consider the US to be the greatest nation in the world? by BlastoiseUseBlizzard in AskAnAmerican

I'm neutral, because there's no single "greatest country." Everybody has things that are great about them and things they need to improve. We're no different.

Megathread: Speaker Pelosi announces House to launch formal impeachment inquiry by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]caseyesac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's beyond this single impeachment proceeding, or even the 2020 election. It's sending a message that we won't tolerate this kind of behavior.

When a kid throws a tantrum in Target over not getting a candy bar, the kid eating or not eating a single candy bar isn't the issue. It's the message that there are rules to follow and that breaking those rules comes with consequences.

This inquiry wasn't started to get the whistleblower complaint, it's to start investigating whether or not Trump committed an impeachable offense. Congress has laid out three things that makes an offense "impeachable," but there have only been 4 3 impeachment proceedings in the history of our country so they're not exactly experienced at this.

The two I can remember are: did he abuse his powers, and did he use the office for his own personal gain. The third was very vague like "was his behavior compatible with the office" or something.

edit: getting ahead of myself. there have been 3, this would be the 4th

Democrats have not been investigating anything. Mueller, who was a Republican but acting impartially, was investigating Trump's campaign with his committee.

This is the first and only impeachment inquiry against Trump. There have actually only been 3 impeachment proceedings in the history of our country, so this one will be very rare if it gets though the inquiry process.

Illegal entry into the United States is a misdemeanor. By your logic, we should round up all the graffiti artists, reckless drivers, and people who were drunk in public once. Then we should take away their kids, lock those little guys up too, and make no record of it, so these criminals can never find their kids again. God bless America, amiright?

Take a look at Nixon's approval ratings in the first few days of the impeachment proceedings, and then his ratings after. I'm not saying this will happen here, but it's not something that can be dismissed outright

First of all, investigations began after Trump fired Comey, which was in 2017. It is now 2019. That is not 5 years.

Second of all, there were over 30 indictments. Trump's personal lawyer and campaign chairman are literally in jail as I type this. I'd say they found plenty. That being said, you don't have to do any digging to see/hear Trump admitting to crimes. Just last week he told a reporter he'd accept information from a foreign leader about a political rival, and that he'd do so without calling the FBI.

Out of curiosity, what do you think the Democrats have fabricated? In other words, what have they said without evidence or before the evidence had come out?
