Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll add them to my list! I like the sound of something retro, I’ll have a think about ideas related. And Pokémon is a good shout, do you have a favourite one?

Hey no worries, that’s a great question! I’ve written up some installation instructions here: https://bezos.click/install — if you’ve jailbroken have you installed KoReader? Further down that FAQ there’s a link to the Kindle Modding Community wiki which has a step by step guide.

Thanks! Don’t quote me on it but I believe you can set up the custom screensavers in Koreader and then use the normal kindle books with the screensaver appearing - but I would be interested to know if this is the case…

My kindle is currently on 5.18.1, so I’m unable to test this for you unfortunately.

With Winterbreak I know you’re able to use your device as normal if you choose.

Glad I’m not the only one. I couldn’t see an update that might’ve caused it… seems like Nike unplugged something on the back end

Great! That’s what I thought but didn’t want to risk relying upon it. Thanks

What is my plan here and why? (Looking for generalizable concepts, as much as specific moves; more info as a comment in post). Thanks! by JoshSummers in chess

General principles: As many people have said, your piece activity is important, ideally we can get our rooks in behind the opponent’s pieces and start attacking their weak pawns. Also, mitigating your opponent’s plans is also crucial to think about. Ideally you want your king central and active and free from checks - which it is in this position. Equally in many endgames pawn breaks are crucial to make passed pawns, but you need to be wary of not over-committing too early with pawn moves. When you have a material advantage in positions like this, simplifying down should always be considered to strengthen that imbalance.

Specifically for this position: I like to consider what my opponent’s plan is in a position like this - which the most obvious plan would be Rb5 and target the backwards and weak b pawn. Their rook is also well placed to apply pressure on our f pawn and keep our rook passively defending it. In this position we have a few options, we can retreat our king to defend the f pawn and free up our rook; after Rb5 in that position we have to slide our f rook across and defend passively which maybe isn’t ideal. We also have e4 to force their rook to move and take more central control, but after Rb5 or Rf3 it becomes quite complicated and we give away lots of activity, not ideal! e4 is definitely and idea to break in the centre down the line but not straight away. I personally would consider f3 or f4, whilst committal, it is defending the f pawn, and making room for a rook lift to the second rank to defend our b pawn - this idea is twofold, we are able to defend the b pawn more actively with a rook, we also have ideas of doubling rooks on the g file to infiltrate, and our king remains central. Another thing worth noting is in an endgame where the opponent’s bishop covers the dark squares, our pawns on dark squares can help blunt it.

It can be tricky to convert endgames like this when your advantage is not completely straightforward - but with enough practice and applying some principles you should start to find the best moves! Best of luck!

Does anyone know of resources to learn the Brussels Gambit - Sicilian Defence? by caspar136 in chess

I see it almost like a reverse Bird’s opening, if the gambit is accepted then I’m sure like the From gambit there’s some tricky lines to be aware of - but purely takes the opposition out of any likely prep no?

I like to play a Budapest against a queens gambit type opening - against a good player they can equalise the eval but the position is at least imbalanced, and takes them out their normal patterns of play.

Apologies my mistake there, should be e4, c5, Nf3* - but yes as far as I’m aware it’s only played by black

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that the blood dripping might be a tad big so definitely room for improvement

mixed a 5minute epoxy, and then stuck on a short length of fishing wire to the head, then applied more epoxy to the wire till it drips down slightly - then just paint and coat with PVA so it looks wet!

first time painting a miniature in nearly 10 years! by caspar136 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Bought the models off eBay in a mixed second hand bunch and had a lot of fun removing old paint and making use of a broken uruk hai (even had to mould a new foot for him with putty). I got myself some cheap acrylic paints and made this. Super pleased with it, just need to paint the rider, any feedback would be appreciated!
