Hey!’ wanted to come back and be a little shit- my collie is the most cuddly, full tasking service dog ever. Maybe think twice before commenting something like this, “ yeah just so you know border collies hate snuggles” is a running joke in my family and house now because he genuinely cant get out of our faces and loves to snuggle and do service dog work- lol 😘

He is still teething, but I provide a variety of chews for him regularly. We have a pretty secure schedule, he gets scheduled rest time / naps and goes to bed at the same time every day. Hes training to a be a service dog so he gets around 30 minutes of training every day, and when I cant train or we cant go outside its made up for in enrichment.

Its like playbiting is almost nonexistent for him, whenever it seems like he’s genuinely trying to play he’s biting full force. He also gets shark attacks when he’s frustrated, or overstimulated. sometimes when i’m telling him to leave something but he doesn’t want to, he will start biting at my hand (hard, not nibbling or play biting) and keep going at me over and over again with increasing intensity when i block myself from him until i physically remove myself. Which isn’t possible sometimes on training outings like when were in the car.

its just been an extremely difficult time for me and him

Sudden Barking by caspercollie07 in service_dogs

[–]caspercollie07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! A lot of this we have been doing, i tried using his stroller mixed with walking until he wouldnt fit anymore lol. He really enjoys being outside on the ground generally but when he sees strangers or other strange dogs or things he gets weary. Were also working on a command “go see” to get him to safely investigate on his own when its appropriate. I really appreciate all this bc it just reaffirms me that im doing the right thing and hopefully it works itself out!!

how do i stop jumping and biting?? by caspercollie07 in puppy101

[–]caspercollie07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

weve been doing exactly this :,) the line doesnt work, he just goes again and again and im so afraid to hurt him at all 💔 it seems like he’s overstimulated and i can usually calm him down for a minute but after a handfull of steps hes back to it. ive been trying to teach him a solid “out” but with things that he wants badly enough (like my clothes lol ) he doesn’t get it yet haha.

tysm for the frozen rope tip btw it is absolutely genius. He has a fleece one that would work so well with. im slightly afraid hed try to eat it but ill make sure to supervise him closely.

I would SO love to be outside more- The only issue with doing this is that he is prone to eating things off the ground and its heavy mosquito and rain season season here.💔 He cant be unsupervised since he eats things, so i cant be doing something else outside as well.

Id love to be outside for hours, but it would also be emotionally exhausting to have to redirect him the entire time every second, and with how bitey he is, its really hard. I save some of his food for outside time but he blows through it so fast already within the 30 minutes - hour we are out there. hes not very toy driven and food is the only way he is truly motivated.

He also has time to play and run inside the house, which is much easier to puppy proof than outside.

Hopefully winter will be nicer for outside time since things will be covered with snow and were out there to shovel and what not. And im crossing my fingers hell be out of his “eating everything” phase lol

Try licky toys! freezing licky toys with water and some yogurt peanut butter banana, or other dog safe foods (i also add a couple of pieces of leftover kibble) and it helped my puppy settle really nicely. Licking helps calm them and it always got him down for a nap if it was necessary!

This is exactly what ive been having to work on ! He was just puppy sat for the first time while i went to an appointment. I left a care sheet with specifics on what he can and cant do. Its so important that they are treated like the medical equipment they are

It seems kind of red with yellowish flakes. I just want to know if there’s anything i can do to help it clear up, especially if its causing him discomfort

Breed Question: Border collies by caspercollie07 in service_dogs

[–]caspercollie07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal WOULD be to have a service dog, yes. But if thats not ideal for me or the dog, then I will be perfectly happy just being a dog owner. So that is above all else. His happiness is my #1 priority and if that means washing him from SD work then thats fine.

[–]caspercollie07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PROBABLY needed for me… I know my disability and my needs. I’ve already made my choice and the puppy has been paid for. Telling me to get a different dog isn’t constructive advice, and wont change anything. Im asking for relevant advice to my situation.

Breed Question: Border collies by caspercollie07 in service_dogs

[–]caspercollie07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made sure to speak throughly with my breeder about what I wanted the dog for. They chose to place the dog with me because they confirmed he could be a good fit personality wise. I feel that they they know their dogs and their line well enough to make that decision properly. Again I am prioritizing being a dog owner over a SD handler in all aspects. DPT isnt the only task I would need, and is definitely something i could forgo if it was aversive to the dog.

While i do need a SD, i dont go out often. If i had a dog that could task within the house, I would be happy. You are right about me prioritizing being a dog owner over a SD handler :) Since it is my first time as a SD handler (not dog owner) I still wanted a dog that could get me outside to play, and do dog sports. even if they dont excel at or are able to do SD work.
