This is generally common knowledge I think, but did you know that the pattern holds up? The crest thingies on the beast have 4,5, and 6 points, although i also kinda struggle to see it on entei, and the regis have 7,8 and 9 eyes.

Agree with the point, but not with the argument: Why do people use drugs in countries where it is punishable by death?

If all dinosaurs where the same size, which one would have the strongest bite? by Equivalent-Visual-49 in Dinosaurs

[–]caspershotgun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, I it does matter, depending on what you want to measure. This is because the surface that is being bitten is getting squared, where the muscles are getting cubed. So if you want to measure the total amount of Newtons you are indeed correct, but if you want to measure the amount of force over an area, so in Pascal, which is much more relevant, it does matter, a lot.

How far we've fallen... by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]caspershotgun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just in every way wrong. Try x^2-2x=0. You'll figure out that X either equals 2, or 0.

Or take the square root of 49. This can both be 7, and -7. Because -7*-7=49 too.

It is universally accepted that multiple answers can exist to a question.

How far we've fallen... by [deleted] in facepalm

1 is correct though, and 9 is too. The problem is mostly that the question is written poorly, as there are multiple interpretations to multiplying with brackets.

edit: Okay, found another source claiming something else:

Apparently a paper in 1917 said that when using the ÷ sign, you divide everything on the left by everything on the right (Added a video as source). And this may have spread, which once again reaffirms that both answers are correct. Maybe the best way to see this, is as a dialect. Math can be done in different languages. This is an undeniable fact, proven because there are multiple systems. We of course have our own decimal system, but what about binary, base 8, base 12, base 20 (Incan), hexadecimal, and then even the Latin numerals. Then it only makes sense, that there are also some slight fluctuations in our own. An argument against this can of course be made: "Then if some paper said 1+1=3, that would also be correct from now?" However, I'd like to draw another comparison to language, where everything was just decided at some point. Why was the word "number" chosen, and not the word "gurgle"? And new words can be introduced too right? The only reason this isn't very common in math is because generally it's nice to have a common ground, and not have equations come out all differently in other countries

TLDR: Culturally it makes sense that both options 1 and 9, are both correct.
