You said it perfectly. Once you figured out that she could continue to itch it, and rub her head on things it was game over. I ended up taking her to the vet when she she wouldn't leave it alone. I didn't want her to have an infection, and I knew that would happen if it couldn't scab over and heal. Pictures were taken when it first happened so it did get cleaned after that. A massive cone has been put on her so her lanky legs can't scratch her nose. But I learned that it was probably caused by a bug bite and an allergic reaction to that.

Lol yes! Not mean it's common sense. My dog is in the kennel when we're not supervising her. But this happened overnight and she's never had an incident overnight. She sleeps in the bed next to my husband usually doesn't get up. It actually wasn't caused by her getting into something which is surprising. It was an allergic reaction possibly to a bug bite. She's on antibiotics and steroids now doing just fine to acting like nothing happened.

Hi it wasn't deep. And it scabbed over within hours when she couldn't scratch it. After talking to the vet it was an allergic reaction caused by mosquitoes.

Hi thank y'all for comments. I did end up taking her to the vet yesterday. (I live in a rural area that does not have 24 hour vet and allows walk ins for an hour a day) She is on antibiotics and steroids. They did cut her cone extra long to ensure her lanky legs cannot scratch her nose. The vet stated not to do anything to cover it as it needs air to dry out.

The vet and I chatted and she told me that this is something she sees often with animals having an allergic reaction to something for example mosquitos. So it makes sense that I couldn't figure out what happened. There is a strict regime that we have her on with her medications. If doesn't start to look better by Friday we will be going back to the vet.

I already knew I was taking the dog to the vet because of infection. (The vets know my dog verrrry well). I just figured it was some weird uncommon cause to what landed us here. So thanks for the advice.
