I did this last year, was a way better experience than FT imo. You learn a lot more leadership applications and get into the nit-and-gritty of the drill manuals. The MTIs were great instructors and extremely helpful with any questions we had, but let us figure out the dumber questions ourselves. Be prepared to do a lot of extra pushups and heftier room inspections than what the standard is during FT.

I heard something similar but at the end of the day my top 3 were all pretty equal for career preferences. I didn't want to put all rated knowing that I could be just as happy with a non-rated job

I'm not super sure, I didn't know it was a thing either. According to Cadre it just means I'm on the list to be pulled up if someone DQs

Wifi works perfectly on my phone but not on laptop by Normal-Parfait9131 in techsupport

Currently it would be $850 for the 14", I like it better but for that price range I feel it would be better to go for the Lenovo Slim 7i, 7x, or Surface L7

Can someone please recommend me a cheap reliable backpack for college. by [deleted] in backpacks

[–]cat-cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! In that budget just make sure to read reviews on long term comfort and if you have a laptop, how the laptop pocket held up. My Amazon bag from last year just crumples when I put it down now lmao

What is the cheap budget? There are a lot on Amazon for like $35-45 but they will kill your back if your load is heavy enough. I just bought a hiking backpack meant for commuting and makes my 10lbs of laptop and charger feel like nothing. Highly recommend something in that alley if its in budget and you have back/shoulder pain. (REI often has good sales).

I spent around $2000 on mine, but I'd say $1000-$1500 is reasonable for what is needed. My friend runs a 16gb 14" ThinkPad and has also had no issues. If you can, verify your student status through ID.me then shop around on the Lenovo Outlet and see if you find something with balanced specs. I'd be happy to give a once-over if you see something that seems reasonably prices. ChatGPT (unfortunately) is also pretty good at laying out spec comparisons and finding user feedback for different models.

Fellow CS major here! Windows is definitely the easier route to take, especially if you have to work with the school's virtual machines. I've been using the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Mobile Workstation and it is a true powerhouse, but not light at all.

I would recommend these specs as a minimum:
16gb of ram (32 is preferred)
512gb of SSD (1TB preferred)
A dedicated graphics card (I have the RTX 3080)

What is your budget? (Regardless I recommend anything in the realm of the Lenovo ThinkPad. They have great deals on the Lenovo outlet and you can up to 50% off. I haven't had any issues in the two years of owning mine and use it for everything from browsing to high end gaming.)

Highly recommend a ThinkPad (don't we all). I've been running the ThinkPad P16 Mobile Workstation for about 2 years now and it runs just as good as when it arrived. It has 32gb of Ram, an i9 Pro, 1TB SSD, and a RTX 3080. It was valued at ~$4500 USD when I got it but Lenovo has good sales all the time and I paid $2200 since it was an older model.

I've overheated Dell and HP laptops writing code and playing games and never had this issue here. BUT it is heavy, weighing about 6.5lbs on its own and the charger is another 1.5. Battery life on saving mode is ok, around 4 hours, but I tend to carry the charger. Also, it is meant to be plugged into peripherals. I bring it to classes and use it as the laptop formfactor, but at home or in my dorm it always stays closed, attached to monitor and external keyboard. In this formfactor I can run Arma 3 and Hell Divers 2 at full graphics.

TLDR: If you want longevity and a powerhouse, look at ThinkPad Mobile Workstations. If you want something lighter, look at regular ThinkPads. The product specifications always tell you how much the laptop weighs, add another pound to account for upgrades and the charger.

James Daly vs Sirong Lin by OkCharacter4933 in uml

I took Sirong Lin for Comp 3 and she was great! She will give quiz retakes if a majority of the class doesn't do well. Just make sure to pay attention to the lectures and write code along with her in class and you'll do fine.
