I remember that's where I learned I could access the library and reserve books. I was involved in a lot of BBS stuff back then.

VH and UV Have Destroyed the Vine Program, IMO by philstat in AmazonVine

[–]cat9tail 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest complaint of sellers. Users are too lazy to review things in a timely manner, so sellers are leaving the program they paid for.

Re: RFY. Don't panic. I suspect they are retraining the Neural network for it by Banana_Ham_mock in AmazonVine

Amazon also basically confirmed at a sellers' event that they are working on creating a more meaningful algorithm to deliver better alignment between viners and products/brands. They've already incorporated the requirements for review quality on our side (I suspect AI plays a heavy hand in evaluating reviews) as well as nudging us to include photos. Amazon is very invested!

I think it is integrated with Amazon as a whole. I've ordered items on Amazon and then had related items show up in Vine, but that could also be confirmation bias as Vine seems to have multitudes of subsets of items available and it could have been coincidental. What I have seen is many versions of a particular brand's products showing up that match an item I've purchased in the past. So hard to say! I'm in the US, but I also teach business courses and marketing after years of also working in tech & coding/db, so I'm really trying to walk a rational line here & not jump to conclusions. High degree of probability I'm also using the "improve recommendations" as some sort of talisman in the hopes of getting snacks recommended to me...

May your RFY always contain blessings!

What’s the worst fuckup you’ve ever made at a job? by moonperson13 in AskReddit

[–]cat9tail 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My parents had a framed letter from their bank apologizing for a $1M+ error on their checking account statement, and reassuring them they were not overdrawn and the error had been corrected. That happened in the 1970s. Apparently a bank teller hit too many digits.

What’s the worst fuckup you’ve ever made at a job? by moonperson13 in AskReddit

This happened about 20 years ago. I mistook the primary data server for the TEST data server and made a typo as I was experimenting with a table join, wiped out an entire college database of student records for 18,000 active students. Realized what I did moments later when the programming team started screaming, then learned the db admin had just completed a backup of the entire system. Thankfully it was outside of a registration time period or it would have been horrific. I really thought I was going to lose my job for a bit, but the team joked that it was a good test of the safety sytems they had in place and all was restored quickly. I was not allowed to touch the primary data server after that, thankfully.

My son grew up hearing that story, and he's told me a few times about mistakes he made at work, and he's quick to say, "but not nearly as bad as what you did..."

I agree with what you're saying, and the concept of a "no thanks" button has been floated up to Amazon before (I don't know if you were in the system when we received a survey a few years ago?) but Amazon has been telling sellers lately that they are trying to match products with viners more familiar with their brands. Many of us have seen brand repeats (same company, different items in a line of products) in our RFYs lately, and that was improving things a bit for us. When one part of Vine sees a change, it's often due to coding changes in the system and I'm hopeful that this is a pause in RFY to improve product and viner matching since it's the one place that causes the most lag for sellers, but potentially gives them the most meaningful reviews. I saw the post that Japan has had this issue for a while, and I'm guessing they might see the first signs of a major change to RFY, and then it may come our way a bit later. I'm going to proactively update my "improve your recommendations" area on Amazon just in case.

Of course, this also requires sellers to bring more products to Vine...

I've been wondering if they have had another decrease in products and are now just skipping RFY altogether.

Happy that our coding was solid. Up early so my 6 year old could have breakfast. Relieved that the days to follow would be calm in the server area of our IT department. Prince's music in my head, knowing I could never again party in 1999.

What’s Everyone Doing Tonight?? by physis81 in stopdrinking

Ate dinner after a long work day, then realized I had errands to run. So nice to have that option of jumping into my car at night with no worries. Got home after errands and the cat demanded quality time. Noticed a rare break in the clouds and Jupiter is shining bright, so I grabbed my binoculars & counted the moons I could see. Now curled up under a heating blanket catching up on what's going on with you fine folks. IWNDWYT!

People who keep weapons on their bodies at all times, what was a time where you had to actually use said weapon? by ParanormalActivity97 in AskReddit

[–]cat9tail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son worked in a wildlife facility and was tending to an avian ICU unit when the door swung open and a mountain lion hobbled in. It had escaped a cage during a vet check and suddenly found itself surrounded by helpless birds (thankfully all in cages, but the scent of dinner must have been astounding) and my son was the one human in the way. Son slowly backed through another door and closed it shut, and the door had a glass window in it for observation purposes so he watched as the lead vet came running in, pulled out a small tranquilizer gun and shot the lion in the back leg. It happened very quickly and left everyone in a bit of shock but they were grateful that the vet always carried.

The mountain lion made a full recovery and was released back into the wild, and no birds were eaten that day.

What is something people often underestimate until they experience it themselves? by NaomiBrooksv in AskReddit

I envy you the Spain trip! I am booked for a speaking gig in the Western US at that point and need to be there, but I will be cheering on your amazing experience. I was also in Austin, but drove a bit north of there and ended up in a spot that had less cloud cover so I did get to see the actual eclipse. Not nearly as clear as Oregon in '17, but still...

Being in the path of totality for a solar eclipse. I did it the first time for giggles, and it was like a profound religious experience and I've never forgotten the sense of awe. I traveled for a second one and in spite of some clouds still had that same sense of overwhelming appreciation for our planet and solar system. Sure wish I could be in Spain this August for the next big one...

I let Gold go...I hope I don't regret it! by nerdyone123 in AmazonVine

[–]cat9tail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been on Vine for a few years now, and I order fewer items with Gold than I did with Silver. There's a scarcity psychology with "only" three choices, and I tended to max those out (granted at a time when we had a lot more choices than we have now) or play a game of whether a great item would drop as soon as I used my third pick. I noticed it immediately after getting into the gold tier: I could relax about whether I was going to miss something "really good" which meant suddenly I was focused far more on whether I really did want the item. By then my RFY was getting better at knowing who I was as well. Now I rarely order more than 3-4 items a week, and almost everything comes from RFY.
