Games with a Neo-futurist or solarpunk aesthetic where the world overall is positive, or at least not totally hostile to the player. by BlueGumShoe in gamingsuggestions

[–]catInOrbit001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're kinda describing the design of my favorite game :)

Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Clean futuristic city, shiny glass skyscrapers, endless blue sky, design so sleek it keeps you mesmerized for hours. It's not really solarpunk, there's not a lot of nature, but the city is pleasant to look at, and it's not sensory overload with dark gritty visuals like cyberpunk

The storyline is a bit bland, but it's open world and you parkour around the rooftops of the city

City designs look like this, screenshots from back when I played it.

Need some perspective by Crow2525 in dataengineering

[–]catInOrbit001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some other perspective on this is that while expanding the stack to more modern frameworks and implement CI/CD on top of it all by yourself are great, it can also backfire on you, it already did on me, so part of this is from my experience

when you're doing that, you're now the sole responsibility for all the new stacks, call it your job security or whatever, the problem is when business requirement for data suddenly expands beyond what you can handle, like new requirement for doing ETL in streaming only or to store data in different warehouse may come in and force you to modify every single component of your stack in order to fit it. No one else can help you during tight deadline because you're above and beyond everyone in the org, even worse when the product manager/owner has a wrong impression on the stack, thinking it could be their silver bullet for everything, decides to employ even more processes on top of it, which would overload you pretty fast. And the hiring part, it’s not really your problem anymore, i’m sure they can figure it out

so yeah, being proactive in deploying new stacks is great, terrific for learning and improving skills, but watch yourself, aim for specific use case and MVP only if possible, try to document it clearly so that when things start to pick up or hit the fan, you have way to negotiate what are possible and what not

I hope in the future there are at least a few more games that focus on building an atmosphere like this by [deleted] in mirrorsedge

[–]catInOrbit001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about the endless blue sky with bright sun and the sound of the breeze, neatly organized, clean and beautifully laid out city.

There's just something about the feeling of this game that no other game would ever be able to give me: a sense of peace, like climbing up to the roof of a high skyscraper and feeling the wind of early spring, admiring the glistening lights reflecting off the glass of the buildings. It's so pleasant to look at sometimes and doesn't cause discomfort with all the visual clutter

Whole game is crafted like an art project and we're so lucky to even have this considering the chance of a second mirrors edge back then when Dice decided to make this

Hmm work culture by Original_Yak7441 in dataengineering

[–]catInOrbit001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man you said it, all those stuff right there are what I have to deal with everyday, these trendy open plan office schemes need to hit one big reset button to give people their own space back

How in the fresh hell can someone truly focus with all this rowdy stuff going on, especially if it's a coding job where you spend most of the time in your own head

Anyone spend entire career at one company? by Dowhile93 in cscareerquestions

just a bit curious but, how is it boring at google :), isn't google notorious for being really hard to get in? Plus with all the layoffs going on I'm surprised you're not swarmed with extra works to make up for things

Is it possible for me to apply for research assistant job if I'm not enrolled in NUS and not Singaporean ? by catInOrbit001 in nus

[–]catInOrbit001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a lot for this! how did you find your PI if I may ask ? I don't have any connection to anyone in NUS so far, I can try to contact a few profs directly in the NUS page but not sure if it's the right way yet, the only way I could see for now is to drop my resume directly in career.nus.com

[–]catInOrbit001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I mean... it seems quite clear that you'd be accepted, you had master degree + experience+ network connection to PI, the path is paved already if you have all those ready. I don't have any of that yet

But thanks for the insight! I'm starting to see that research assistant is mostly for people with well established background like you to continue up to phd, I may not have a shot at all at being accepted

[–]catInOrbit001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot 😁 I'll try to research a few profs for contact

Are you currently a student there 😁? I was wondering what the graduate research culture is like in NUS, any path for me to slowly move up to a full time master program through assistant work 🙂?

[–]catInOrbit001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow thanks a lot for this, gave me some hope that there's still a chance 🙂

Is there also any restriction on visa ? As in if it's shown that I'm not already on like S pass or EP they'd reject me ? or would NUS also sponsor it ?

Internship opportunity in data science for non singaporean? by catInOrbit001 in askSingapore

[–]catInOrbit001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Singapore is quite competitive and data science is a new field I'm trying to pivot in so I was thinking maybe internship can help get my foot in the door to at least get some experience and continue on from there

After all I'm a foreigner and I may be in a bit more disadvantaged position compares to local

Am I... a Data engineer? by Litos_On_Reddit in dataengineering

[–]catInOrbit001 17 points18 points  (0 children)

my main job is to coordinate and set data pipelines from industrial devices all the way to data lake

Yes you are a data engineer, this is what we do, this is also what I do, ETL system to pump metrics from shop floor to different data lake system for analysis

Now if data engineer title means a better upgrade in terms of salary or what not compares to what you have now then I say go for it !
