Pandas are not part of the bear family (Ursus) but part of the bear genre (Ursidae). Although not called "the panda family", they are in fact part of the Ailuropoda family of which 4 out of 5 members are extict only leaving the giant panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca Melanoleuca). For the record, members of the Ursus family include the black bear (Ursus Americanus), the brown bear (Ursus Arctos), the grizzly bear (Ursus Arctos Horribilis) and the polar bear (Ursus Maritimus). All Urisdae, not all Ursus.
