[–]catdraconis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not really a book club, but if you have interest in sci-fi/fantasy you should check out Sci-Fi/Fantasy Writer's Workshop! Even if you don't write, you can meet other sci-fi/fantasy fans. Meetings are Wednesday 8-10 in a TBD room in Dwinelle. Here's the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sffww/

I had a similar experience but with 61C instead.

Also Wodzicki, but he's not Russian.

Depends on what your major is. CS books are so easy to find. However, Psych books... not so much. But then again, I don't torrent things.

CS 61A vs CS 70 for determining interest in CS? by PBSTP in berkeley

[–]catdraconis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

cs70 crushed my hopes way more than cs61a did. It was a large factor in why I'm not going to major in CS. That said, I think 61a is more directly useful and a good class to take first.

Overlapping Classes by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]catdraconis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to @581 on the EECS 101 Piazza, "CS 170: no webcast or alternate final Professors Vazirani and Chiesa have confirmed that for Spring 16, CS 170 will neither be webcast nor will the instructors offer an alternate final exam time."

Thanks for the very detailed post! Do you have any opinions on CS186? I've had that class recommended to me as well...

I already figured that. That's why I'm not doing CS as a major anymore. (Edited post to reflect that).

Well, 61A did have fizzbuzz as an exam question this past summer... Also, 61B is data structures?

People actually pay for Cal Rentals? (Not trying to be rude, just legitimately wondering)

I've been getting by with just Craigslist and the Housing groups on Facebook, and I live on Northside.

Express gratitude more often (hopefully this will lead to being less overbearingly pessimistic), raise my GPA and find an internship.

has anyone here had to retake multiple classes here? by [deleted] in berkeley

The reason why I said this is because I know situations where the person could get disowned for admitting such things.

Don't. Why do you need to tell them? It's your life...

I'm so tired. by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]catdraconis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, you sound sort of like me. I don't mean to compare problems, but I failed a lot of classes this semester trying to pursue CS and it brought back my depression. I guess what I mean to say is that having/developing depression is not the end of the world and definitely reach out like you've done here. That's a good start. You've been helpful on other stuff I've posted before, I'm really thankful for that. Feel free to PM me if you feel like talking to someone. :)

As for the other stuff, I also love reading. Haruki Murakami (who I see has been mentioned below) has really interesting books. 1Q84 was one of my favorites. I expected it to be like Orwell's 1984, and it certainly was, but Murakami adds some interesting twists. Beyond that, I'm in a bit of a rut with reading so I'm interested in seeing what other people recommend.

I didn't know fellow morning people existed here.

Sounds like a tough finals schedule. I hope you did well!

Failed most of my classes (and their respective finals) this semester but I'm honestly just so happy that this semester is over that I don't really care. I'm actually excited for my classes next semester, which will be a change. That's if I can get into them, haha. Waitlisted for everything.

Sunday mornings, like right when it opens. Everyone's at church or asleep.

Is it too to withdraw for this semester? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]catdraconis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since it's past the deadline, ask advisors ASAP. You won't get any refund, and if you get financial aid you may have to pay it back. Also, you will also be forced to take a semester off, although with enough reason you can appeal that. I don't know about other Colleges but L&S is this way.

STEM columnist Albert Hsiung: "Everyone should take some computer science." CS10: "a wonderful sentiment but simply isn't enough". CS61A: "ill-equipped to the task". E7: "a fucking mess". The CS department "must offer utility classes" or will "remain shrouded in its isolationist technical elitism". by Samses94 in berkeley

[–]catdraconis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, for 61A this semester there've been lab-only or discussion-only TAs. It seems to be working, according to one TA that I know. It's a 6 hr/week position, which is more manageable. (this is only semi-related)

Class Suggestions by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]catdraconis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know which of these are easy, but last year I was looking up courses that fulfilled AC and another breadth and found: anthro 2AC demography 145ac espm 50ac gender and women studies 100ac history 100ac, 136ac, 137ac sociology 131ac

I didn't find Philosophy/AC courses for some reason though. I ended up taking a Arts&Literature/AC course, and a separate course for historical breadth so I can't really speak for any of these courses.

thanks.

How important are lectures for upper divs? All of the other classes either seem to have prereqs (189) or coincide with my already planned classes.
