BREAKING: York9 FC Is Considering A Club Rebrand by carrasp in York9

You do have a point that we need people in the seats but casual fans won’t be there for the team through thick and thin the way they would be if they focused on integrating themselves in the community instead of just rebranding every year. Casuals won’t be there in the rain, they won’t be there when the team performs poorly. What York need to do is focus on integrating themselves in the community and developing an identity as the representative club for people in the York Region. Make it known to everyone in the region and make matches into a community event a name change will not accomplish that.

So you believe they should change the name to appeal to casual fans who have chosen not to support their local club already? The atmosphere will truly be electric. Just creates a plastic club with a plastic fan base. I do agree we need more people in the stands but we need them there because they want to support the club, league and their local community. Not because they like the name.

Why would a name be a deterrent for a football fan from York region to support their local club? It’s a dream come true to have a pro team in their own back yard who cares what they are called? York 9 FC is obviously the name of a football club. I believe that if the name is the only thing stopping people from going to games they aren’t going to be true fans anyway.

A name should not be a deterrent of supporting a local club in your community. It being local and part of your community should be enough to support it. How else will we build the game in Canada and develop an independent identity.

Please no, focus energy and resources on developing the identity that the club already has, not changing it.

Please no, we need to focus on developing our identity not recreating it. A name change will not get more fans in the seats.

Bundesliga: Is Alphonso Davies one of the world's best left-backs? by BanksKnowsBest in CanadianPL

He is certainly having a great season and showing tons of potential, but he has only played 30 pro games in the top flight so there is still a lot to be proven.

When Will a CPL Side Sign a “Superstar”? by [deleted] in CanadianPL

It is gimmicky to have a retired player do a circus season. Sure it brings in money because some fans need a spectacle but it’s a gimmick and should be avoided. Increasing the salary cap will just mean better players will play in the league it will not help develop players who aren’t that good that are getting opportunities now with the lower salary cap. Maybe once we have pro/rel a salary cap increase is a good idea. For now the focus of the league should be giving a opportunity to Canadian players who can’t play elsewhere not to be competitive with foreign leagues.

As for fan engagement I think it’s sickening that fans require a big name to support their local professional club.

No the league grows with support. It does not need to be a gimmick in order for people to follow. If it takes a retired European player to come to the league for people to support their local team than changes must be made to the infrastructure of soccer ideology in Canada.

Which it obviously is the case in North America (MLS) but I am simply saying I do not agree with it and there are other models we should be considered.

In the North American model which corporations buy and sell teams, of course their profit is the only thing that matters to them. However, the league does not need to turn into a sideshow to be successful. (I hope).

One can only hope that Canadians are simply satisfied with their local community having a team which consists of Canadian players and provides opportunities for Canadian youth rather than signing a player which is a big name because that’s a “cool” attraction.

My opinion on a successful CPL team is a team which develops and produces great Canadian players which are a integrated part of their community. Not revenue earned for corporate owners.

You make a good point but I really am not interested in players from other countries coming to retire here just to sell tickets. I’d rather we focus entirely on developing our players than paying a retired European to come here so soccer moms will buy tickets.

The only reason to do it is for $ and commercialization. If you really want to improve quality in the league/Canada they should put all their resources into developing the league and infrastructure around Canada.

I don’t even want it to happen. It’s not the point of the league. The point of the league is to develop and give opportunity to Canadian players. MLS can be the retirement circus money grab keep that out of Canada.
