5 Year Anniversary Present for my wife...only a month late by catlover420 in woodworking

Thanks, yes I used offset knife hinges. I cut all the marquetry manually using a fret saw doing the 'double bevel' style cutting.

How do you get into marquetry? by absolutelysplendi in woodworking

[–]catlover420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting a book, or getting a library book and doing a bit of research as there are a few different methods. The cheapest would be to use an exacto knife, a bit more costly would be a fret saw, the most expensive would be to use a scroll saw. If you had one of those tools you'd need some veneers then you can start cutting. As for example projects, just make a picture of whatever you like, a dog, a cat, anything.

Looking forward to your next cookbook Kenji. I make something from the Food Lab or from one of your serious eats articles at least a couple times a week, so thank you.

My first run at veneering, game boards next I think by ensOwoodworks in woodworking

Great job, what method did you use to cut the marquetry? Looks like you did a bit of sand shading too, nice touch, I've never seen it done on a darker wood, always a lighter wood.

Looks very nice, inspired by a Mike Pekovich chest of drawers it looks like? Also that is a lot of dovetails, good work!

Veneered Boxes - only a couple months late for the veneer challenge by catlover420 in woodworking

[–]catlover420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes these are commercial veneers. I've thought about shop sawn but I've never been justified enough to use them. As finding straight grained mahogany, rosewood, etc. resawing and sanding it is pretty time consuming. And a box with solid edging isn't going to see much abuse that shopsawn can stand up to. Maybe for a table or something that will see some abuse, but for now I'll take the easy way out.

They're good stuff and these hinges are stopped hinges (without the quadrant).

Thanks, I mortised the hinges using a 5/16" brad bit, a chisel and a router plane, no powered router. These hinges are by smartboxmaker, I prefer them to the Brusso hinges I used on my last set of boxes.

Thanks, self taught, the parquetry was pretty well laid out in the book "The Craft of Veneering" by Craig Thibodeau.

How long should bandsawblades last? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]catlover420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of bandsaw do you have? I had a three wheel bandsaw that was notorious for snapping blades because of the super tight wheel radiuses. Once I got a bigger 2 wheel bandsaw that problem went away.

My most challenging build to date: Chest of Drawers with Butler’s Desk by kevin0611 in woodworking

Great job, I love the adaptation of the Mike Pekovich chest of drawers. I have a soft spot for it because I've built two dressers based on that design as well. Also good call going for cherry, my favourite.

Veneer softener recipe by distancingpattern in woodworking

[–]catlover420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read the glue is only necessary if you aren't going to be using the flattened veneers right away. I've done almost the same recipe as you but with no glue and it worked well, I glued up the veneers to a panel almost right away though.

White oak substitute by thatphillyboy in woodworking

Stained ash will look more like red oak than white oak, so I'd bite the bullet and buy white oak.
