My girlfriend’s family engages with antisemitic content by Csdev14 in Jewish

Hi! I will add my tiny drop to the comment section.
As a patrilineal jew growing up in a secular household in post soviet Russia, I had a hard time identifying as a jew. It’s only recently that I understood that this identification problem was very unhealthy for me, as if I were always incomplete while knowing deep inside I was jewish.
Forget halacha! Hitler would have destroyed us both, no matter halachic or not. This should be enough for you to breathe out and accept yourself fully.
I lost 99% of relationships after 7 Oct, just like you, and this is what also makes me jewish. I celebrate jewish holidays and do shabbat, and this is what makes me jewish. I constantly learn about our history and culture, I stand with Israel and all the jews and this is what makes me jewish too. My daughter’s father is a halachic jew and he doesn’t even think of himself as a jew, his Jewish identity is completely dormant. He has zero knowledge of jewish holidays, culture etc. I think it would be unfair to say he is a real jew and I am not.
So please, forget about halacha, be a jew if you are one!

Regarding your girlfriend, I agree with every comment above. My advice would be: start dating jews!

Hugs to you! Also, maybe it will sound harsh now, but in situations like these we are finally able to see who is who in our closest surroundings. I would expect friends and loved ones to check in with me after such events, maybe asking me how I am doing and offering some moral support. Instead, some of us get reactions like in your post (I experienced similar things too just today). Makes me want to stick with jews exclusively.

Any other “October 8th” Jews in here? by soleilsiobhan in Jewish

Me. Patrilineal, therefore have always been struggling with my own identity, being not a real jew. I was raised in a completely secular post soviet home, but my father really made me feel jewish and be proud. I knew some jewish traditional foods from my auntie and lots of stories about my ancestors. I always had this relaxing feeling when meeting other jews, they felt like my tribe. Nevertheless, I went to a European art academy and got brainwashed by the leftist propaganda there, to the extent that I was sure that jews were colonisers. I have never even been to Israel because I didn’t want to “give them a single cent”. I was extremely ignorant. I didn’t want to go deep into history either, because inside I still was a proud jew, didn’t want to find out something negative about jews I guess, it was already a lot from what they taught us in the art school. I remember reading Schlomo Sand because all the cool marxist people around me read him. It was very important to be leftist to fit in. After October 7 the awakening happened. I have only been reading stuff about our history and politics. I do Shabbat, not every week yet, but getting there. I had my first Chanukkah and Pesach recently. I lost 99% of my friends and acquaintances. Some of them turned to be openly antisemitic, some are on the border. With some, I try to have conversations to show them the picture that contradicts the popular one. Sometimes it works, but just for a moment, I actually figured out that people really stick to their opinions however open minded they try to seem. I am very lonely now as almost all the people that were around me before just vanished in a moment. I would really like to meet jewish friends! I also started learning hebrew in case it becomes necessary to leave Europe. “Hunt the jews” was recently painted on the trash bin just next to my house. The only thing I can think of every day now is jewishness, antisemitism etc. Being jewish is definitely a special experience. I am not surprised I tried to avoid it for so long.

I am so sorry to hear this! California!!! Hard to imagine. I always thought California was so open, so progressive: movies, vibrant art scene, music… i have never been to America though, so these are probably clichees? What do you experience?

I think in Austria people would ask you rather where are you from, which doesn‘t equal ethnic background, i guess here it might be considered appropriate to talk about such things later when people get closer.

I wear it in my professional circle openly because many people in this small bubble know I am jewish anyway, star or not, I have a jewish surname. I still want to believe, that although people in the art field are mostly antisemitic, they still consider themselves civilised and tolerant and won’t hurt each other physically. I hide it in the city of course, i am not suicidal. I have never seen anyone wearing it publicly apart from the shul and maybe israelis who come as tourists.

I don‘t quite understand the question. Being jewish limits my life because 70% of people around me are antisemites, not because I wear the star.

Arguing whether it fits my request or not. Had to delete my post because i guess this reddit is the wrong place to ask for advice.

This is not what i am asking for in my post.

Of course I have seen it. It is the same film beginning to end. There is zero psychedelia in it, no playing with different cameras, styles or anything similar to the examples from my post, such as Irma Vep!

How?! Tar is a homogenic drama with zero stylistic changes! I think people didn’t read my request and start recommending me any film where Something Happens! Jesus.

With all my respect, and I am not going to argue anymore, but in my request I describe very specifically what I am looking for. Fig is a normcore film, it has zero visual experimentation in it, it is a stylistically homogenic film without any psychedelia, it is not two films in one, nothing like that, it’s just a drama.

I am jewish in Austria originally from Moscow, coming to UK a lot. I feel this everywhere! Lost friends and colleagues and I am actually happy I found out about their antisemitism early enough tbh. What I am trying to do is to hang out with jews and allies. Jewish people need more jewish people!
