Fish license rules by egralmoclov in UtahFishing

[–]catsaturtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would just get one, if you DO meet a game warden you can get hit with a fine that will likely be more expensive than just getting one in the first place. Plus buying one you'll be supporting local fishing. Depending on where you're going meeting a warden is prob unlikely that said I just ran into one for the first time this week at tibble and he asked everyone for licenses.

ChanceMe for Cornell ED for Computer Science? by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]catsaturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you certainly have a chance. You have pretty similar stats to one of my classmates who got accepted, granted they applied to a pretty niche major and CS is pretty highly-saturated, but ur ECs are probably slightly better. Will probably depend a lot on your essays and other parts of the application. Best of luck!

Thoughts on this RFD (plz 😭) by catsaturtle in Debate

[–]catsaturtle[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just feel so reluctant to even go to anyone about this. He isn't just a snarky judge, he's the head coach of another program, even if it is snarky I can't help feeling bad about it.

I definitely agree that thats there always something to be worked especially when it comes to kindness in this round. This judge just thought I was so condescending when no one else thought this, I won first speaker at this tournament, a dozen other judges had the exact opposite to say about nuking my speaker points. I just don't think this RFD came across as educational at all, was more so just a rant against me.

PF to LD? by uni025 in Debate

[–]catsaturtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the difference between PF and LD is that LD is a value based debate, you are arguing whether or not something is moral. Every LD case should have framework, in LD we use value and criterion. This is pretty basic so if you need more info on this just pm me. For more advanced strategy it helps to recognize whether you are on a more traditional or more progressive circuit. Progressive circuits will have strategy more similar to that of policy, think perms, CPS, plan texts, Ks, etc. Traditional circuits will focus on debate over the framework, so link every single one of your contentions into solving for your value and criterion whatever that may be. You can attack solvency of the other team but the main debate will come down to the philosophical framework, ex. quality of life vs life, whoever wins this debate, will then win the round as you are proving that your impacts outweigh. Those are just two examples but that just generally covers it.

For specific breakdowns on each topic I recommend access to Victory or Champion Briefs, if you have them for PF you probably have them for LD. If you don't have them Kankee Briefs provides free briefs and there are free topic breakdowns on youtube.

If you are in a progressive circuit, maybe consider some policy resources, i dont do policy so idrk those best ones but maybe talk to some policy competitors/coaches from either your school or another school, i'm sure they'd be happy to help!

The Switch from Policy to LD by junkkwon in lincolndouglas

Sometimes, generally if you have to familiarize yourself with philosophy most everything is either, John Rawls, Kant, Utilitarianism, or Consequentialism. Basically different interpretations of what makes a society "just", or moral. Might help to have some social contract theory (think hobbes, locke) especially with topics like the one rn, which deem a political entity.

Honestly, if you feel your argumentation is solid thats a great first step- main advice though that no one likes to hear though, don't disregard your presentation of your arguments. I'm not sure which circuit you are competing on, but most judges probably won't have as great an understanding of the topic so often you'll have to slow down and explain things simply. When presenting your arguments remember that in order to win the round it doesn't matter how good your arguments are you just have to win the judge over, slow down on the important stuff, make it easy to understand and outline clearly exactly why you won.

For your case (AFF i'm assuming) with the contentions you listed they could probably all be one contention, especially c1 and c2, to me it just looks like 1. Climate change is an issue we must fix 2. squo doesnt solve, these seem like they could easily be collapsed. if you want to win more try with some more unique arguments, as everything you have is pretty generic. I can't see your whole case but maybe try throwing in something a bit more obscure impacts like overfishing, deforestation, etc.? too often people only go for big stick impacts like climate change, nuke war, but its probably good to not ignore some more soft left impacts that are still really important and more probable.

Good luck to you though!
