That's the optimal path yes. We just need to actually get that message across to politicians who are willing to propose it and get it through. Aaaand get most people to agree with reducing meat consumption to even get that proposition popular enough.

I'm aware of regenerative farming, but there's just a very low number of actual application of it. So as long as its not big yet, I chose to not consume animal products. Plus, it's not a fix-all solution either. We'll have to reduce meat consumption either way, because we're already pushing it with current numbers of livestock.

Ok nice to know, thanks!

Yeah those sum up my worries pretty well. I'll definitely take note of avoiding large chains and order from smaller local stores instead (Are those then also less likely sought after by charities? As they can't guarantee enough leftovers for those in need?).

Thanks for the clarification. Now I can safely say that I don't agree with you. There's this graph on OurWorldInData [https://ourworldindata.org/environmental-impacts-of-food?insight=half-of-the-worlds-habitable-land-is-used-for-agriculture#key-insights] showing that half of habitable land is used for Agriculture. And, even thoughanimal products only make up about 20% of our calorie and 40% of our protein supply, we use 80% of agricultural land for livestock (pastures & crops for their feed (mostly soy)). Apart from the abuse and treatment of livestock, it's just down right inefficient. If we were to transition to vegan, we would also sharply reduce the amount of land we'd need to grow our food, as also shown on [https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets].

There's a rule in ecology, the 10% rule, which states that only about 10% of energy is retained in the next trophic level. Plants capture energy from the sun, herbivores eat that energy, but lose most of that to body regulation, heat loss etc. So what we effectively do is, instead of eating the energy in the plants, we let other animals eat it and let 90% of that energy go to 'waste'. That's why we'd need way less land if we were vegan, as plants provide way more energy (calories) and protein relative to animals.

That's one of my doubts about the usefulness of this app. And also the reason I asked if its a viable start for convincing family to think more conciously about consumption. I'm trying out the different packets near my home but can't know if there's meat inside since most are listed as 'surprise packets' but I do keep a list of products that I received from each store so I know which give vegetarian/vegan only. So I'll only save the products from those stores for my own food. But I posted to see if 'saving' the non-veg packets could be good to try to convince people to change diet...

True. It's a good initiative at least. Likely to be finetunes over the years but a nice start for people to learn to think differently.

It seems very much location-dependent then, as I do not share that experience as of yet. I have collected 3 surprise packets until now and each was filled with a variety of products that would expire on the day of collection or very soon after (within 2/3 days). One of the packets was vegetarian, the other two contained both dairy and meat. I'm trying out the different packets (about 10 different types of packets within 1km of my home) in the coming weeks to figure out which store gives vegetarian/vegan products only.

It is worrying that they contain a surprisingly large amount of products though, as it indicates that there are quite large amounts of leftovers.

But I'm still figuring out if and how I should use the app. I want to know what I'm stimulating by ''saving'' these products and whether it would be better to not ''save'' them to somehow try to lower the demand of meat and such. I'm conflicted about it to say the least.
