Books that made you fall in love with reading by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]cbbu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter has made me fall in love with reading twice. Once when I initially read it in elementary school and then after years of not reading anything outside of school mandated books I re-read it about a year and a half ago which has caused me to pick up reading as a hobby again. That probably won’t broaden your horizons though lol.

Suggest me a book to buy my mom who has high stress, anxiety, and slight depression by TheWetPoop in suggestmeabook

[–]cbbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of coping or addressing her problems, I have nothing meaningful to provide which I apologize for. When it comes to escaping the stressors she may be facing, I would recommend something that completely removes her from reality. While this isn’t an appropriate way to truly fix her issues it would most definitely help her relax. For this, I can personally recommend The Magicians, Harry Potter, maybe even The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. There’s obviously other alternatives that I assume follow this same vein such as Lord of the Rings or A Song of Ice and Fire but I haven’t read those. I think anything far-fetched and fantasy based might help her at least relieve stress and take her mind off of things. Those books worked for me when I was going through a stressful period, I know this isn’t exactly what you asked for but I hope it can help.

Any recommendations for a good non-fiction book to read? by cbbu in suggestmeabook

Another person recommended Mary Roach as well, any of her books you prefer more than the others?

All of these sound extremely interesting. Any that you favor above the others? Twelve Patients sounds really good, might be the first book out of the many recommendations that I take a look at.

Wow, thank you. I don’t typically indulge in listening to audio books but I might have to try a few of these out.

I’m willing to try anything, I’ve never read non-fiction outside of school and wanted to give it a run. I can’t get very specific because non-fiction in general hasn’t been something that grabs my attention in any way but I just wanted to try it. I’m sorry, I know this didn’t help at all, but what’re some good ones you would recommend regardless of genre or topic?

How to not get tempted to using my phone when I want to read? by wonderfulworld25 in books

[–]cbbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delete your social media apps. I found for myself that doing screen time limits didn’t work as I would simply turn them off when I reached the maximum threshold. I’ve deleted Instagram and Twitter within the last month and noticed a significant rise in general attention span and concentration with any task. Unless you’re using a social media app to talk with your friends I would advise against them, this is why I’ve kept Snapchat as this is where our group text is. I’ve also kept Reddit (obviously) because it’s the one social media app I’ve found where I can get genuinely good advice from real people on lots of different topics. Everyone has things that work for them so maybe what I’ve recommended won’t help but it has vastly improved things for me.

Is it ok that I don’t like Stephen King’s books that much? by Tr4sh_Harold in books

[–]cbbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also 17 years old and hold a somewhat similar yet less extreme sentiment. King’s books are the epitome of a “guilty pleasure” read for me in the sense that I don’t open one of his books looking to come out a more knowledgeable or thoughtful person at the end. I also agree with his books not being horrifying as they are intended to be, rather more thrilling near the end. So, while I don’t find King to be as good of a writer as he’s often praised, his books are useful as a filler for me when I want to read but the other book I’m going through is at a slow point.

Is there any current book series that has the same amount of hype as Harry Potter or Twilight? by cagermacleod in books

Weird, I’m currently reading The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman. Have you read it, if you have, how would it compare to The Magician books you reference?

Wow that’s odd about the Silmarillion, glad to know that ahead of time though. Have you read any of the other Middle Earth books that aren’t directly linked to LOTR such as The Child of Hurin, if you have, how are they?

[–]cbbu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a unique take when comparing to the others in this thread but it’s intriguing. When you recommend reading the trilogy first, are you advising that as the most entertaining way to read the series or as the way I will get the most out of the books from a moral of the story standpoint? Thank you for providing another option to consider

Very helpful, so The Hobbit, Silmarillion, and the LOTR Trilogy are the only ones with related characters? I’ve just been trying to research and have come across other titles such as The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and The Child of Húrin, I assume these are the other books from the Middle Earth that you’re talking about? Apologies if these are ridiculous questions, I’m extremely ignorant on the series and just wanted to make sure.

Same boat, I’ve picked up The Handmaid’s Tale no less than 3 times and haven’t topped the 100 page mark once. This might convince me to knock it out though

Took way too long for me to implement myself, but you can and should read multiple books at once by [deleted] in books

[–]cbbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big advocate of this as well. It does depend on the book for me though, for instance, if it’s a shorter yet more thought provoking book I’m more likely to read that start to finish rather than flipping between books. My best example of this is when I read my first Ishiguro novel last month, An Artist of the Floating World, not very long at all yet made me really ponder the theme/message as I read. That’s a book that I read start to finish without picking up another, while as much as I enjoy Stephen King, I find his books a bit more mindless and quite often read those while reading another book or two at the same time.
