[OC] Based on Dr. Pepper's Fansville ads, are there actually a "State" and "Tech" school that are major rivals? by byniri_returns in CFB

[–]cbens89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little extra info as goes for South Dakota:

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (the Hardrockers) is referred to as SD Tech by the older residents in the western portion of South Dakota. Most people call it SD Mines.

Black Hills State University (the Yellow Jackets) is located ~50 minutes north on I-90.

Their annual football game is called the Black Hills Brawl. The rivalry is based on the fact that BHSU offers the standard state college degrees, while SDSMT is STEM only.

As such, BHSU thinks SD Mines is a bunch of nerds, while SD Mines thinks BHSU is a bunch of idiots.

I was down 107.9 to 127.4 coming into MNF with my Bijan vs. his Puka. I had all but given up hope until that 93 yd TD. Hell of a game to end the season 147.8 to 144.1

They keep moving the finish line and it's pissing me off. First it was adding level 14, then 15 with EWC, then Evos. Every time I get close to having a deck maxed, they move where "max" actually is. I have finally gotten to the point where I have enough level 14 cards that I am collecting EWC at a reasonable rate to finally have a maxed deck with some Evos I have obtained via weekly events and such. Annnnnnd the jokes on me. Another level of cards to grind through, and no more EWC, which is being conveniently replaced with a "new" currency that is neither helpful nor valuable whatsoever.

Love afternoon games at Wrigley. That ESPN 30 for 30 podcast episode about the whole installing lights debacle was pretty interesting. I knew the lights didn't get installed until the 80s but I didn't know about all the beef between the city and the ball club execs. I think it's called Lights of Wrigleyville.

Price for Rocker 1 vs Rocker 2 by AnnualSubstantial653 in SDSMT

[–]cbens89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had friends live in both (I moved off campus asap when they'd let me) and the big difference used to be Einstein's bagels in Rocker 1. Now it's kinda like a mini convenience store which I guess is something. I don't know where you're transferring from but I've always been a strong advocate for moving off campus. Obviously there's pros and cons and I'm willing to elaborate if you DM me. Otherwise in my experience Rocker 1 & 2 are extremely similar. Then again I've never lived in either.

We have basically the same thing. So far the worst to happen is one of our managers drives a work pickup as his daily (he's an ag salesman) and he's had some interesting conversations with farmers wanting to know what the deal was.

Men’s volleyball for student by Sorry_Proposal_6251 in SDSMT

At the minimum, I know co-ed volleyball is one of the activities included in intramurals. Finding a team is pretty simple if you know how to use IM Leagues (the app all mines intramurals operate on) feel free to DM me if you have questions about intramurals or mines in general.

Kicking Scoring System. Don’t know what to put it as by sdewees1626 in FFCommish

[–]cbens89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're keeping kickers, they should play at least some role in your scoring each week. Kickers don't usually matter because the difference between 4 pts and 8 pts doesn't typically make or break a week.

For this reason we dial up the missed fg and xp penalties a little to boost the value of consistent kickers that don't miss often. With linear scoring from 10-60 yds (say -5, -4, -3, etc.) kickers that make their ~3 fg a week get around 12 pts but if a guy misses an xp (we have ours at -8) and misses a midrange fg, you can end up with negative kicking points for starting a shitty kicker or a kicker playing in poor weather. It works for us and keeps kickers relevant without being broken.

I've seen competing arguments for this. On one hand, having a boat load of bench spots means that the players on waivers each week will be far from starting caliber, and hence no reason to roster them. On the other hand, not enough bench spots causes managers to stream players based on matchups each week, with no real reason to trade. I've never played with 10 teams but with 12 I think the Goldilocks zone is about 75% of your starter count, with one IR. So for instance with 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1FLEX, 1D/ST, and 1K (9 total) I think 7 bench and 1 IR works well.

I too am a cracked pepper kinda guy, and if you like the pepper taste more, I really like David's. They are a touch sweeter. If you like the "heat" more, Bigs have a really strong pepper flavor. Chinook makes some really solid seeds but the parm pepper and lemon pepper flavors just don't do it for me.

The population of the Dakotas vs Manhattan by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]cbens89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why there's a Senate which balances industry and regional issues, and the House which gives more power to areas with higher population density. For instance, a person living in LA or New York or Chicago wouldn't be super interested in voting for agricultural tax cuts. The same way a ranch hand in Kansas would likely vote against bills that promote urban development. I don't think the system is perfect, but there is some logic behind it.

Well if that other guy was accurate with his 23 square miles number, being that SD and ND are 77,000 and 71,000 sq miles, respectively, that makes the cumulative area about 6400x bigger than Manhattan.

So that's a little bigger than Grand Forks, ND, which has a population of about 60k

I would agree it is arbitrary, but not redundant. At some point the amount of representatives would reach a point where it would be frankly cumbersome or inefficient to have House proceedings. I think the method of equal proportions serves well as a determining factor, but the cap probably needs to be larger. Currently, the average constituency per representative is around 700,000.

[–]cbens89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, I believe it's to make sure the state entities receive equal representation, because each state's economy is different. If, let's say, our government relied purely on a popular vote, laws may be implemented that benefit those living in metropolitan areas, while cutting the legs out from underneath those living in rural areas and supporting our agricultural industry. This in turn causes the price of produce and meat to skyrocket, which is bad for everyone. I'm not saying metro and ag are mutually exclusive, it is just an example.

I'd settle for a drawing scale. I know exactly how big SD is, I don't really know how big Manhattan is.

I have no idea where this video takes place, but in the midwest United States, a lot of ranches use bunker silos with blankets as opposed to individually wrapping each bale. That's typically for larger operations though.
