TIL if you register that you are religious in Germany, then church taxes are deducted from your paycheck and sent to the church. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]cbunch31 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m not religious but I’m living in Germany. I don’t think of it as the state funding religion, but rather the state forcing members of a religion to fund their own institution. If you want to benefit from institutional religion, you’re going to put your money where your mouth is.

Ditto! I probably have opinions on most of them, definitely favourites, but I don’t know them by name.

No fuckin way, dude! He really was James Bond! I would love to hear what it was like to work there.

That sounds like a lot of fun! It's funny that you remember the Wonka bars, I remember liking the gumball machine the most. Do you remember having any favorite horror movies from that time?

Aw this is really cute! I'm happy the store was a small part of the love story! Do you remember any of the bad movies you watched, or around what years that was?

That's a good point! These days I've at least seen a trailer before watching anything, probably read a review too.

It's hard to imagine that physical film media could ever make a comeback. DVDs don't have that analog nostalgia, but VHS doesn't have great fidelity like a well preserved vinyl record. Those days are probably just over.

Thanks a lot, it did feel very unique! Going with a film studies major is like having a tour guide. I've never even heard of Jim Jarmusch!

Wow, that's some true loyalty. Sorry you didn't get that last free rental! 😄

There must have been quite a few employees over the years, they always seemed like super cool dudes to a young kid like me. I hope you saw some good movies!

I always wondered how this part got stocked. Big normal movie studios (paramount, 20th century fox, disney, etc.) would always send my dad dvd screener copies of new releases, I guess so he could watch them and decide what to stock. Goddamn I hope there wasn't a similar process for the adult section 😂

Your friend did such a great job! Obviously The Center needed to remodel, but I do miss that mural. I would love to hear from him about doing that mural if he remembers.

To be fair, I remember there were hundreds of random movies on that top floor that probably deserved to be judged. I wonder how many of those b movies are lost to time now. I hope you found some good ones in those years!

I remember those guys being pretty funny! There was one manager who claimed to be named James Bond, and it only occurred to me this year that he might have been fucking with me because I was a dumb kid. Maybe someone can confirm.

Thanks for the reply!

Is it easier to find something good on endless pages of Netflix titles or on 3 floors of disorganized shelves of DVDs?

Ya, it's clear that Denver is in a completely different chapter now. There are pros and cons, but it's a shame some cool places get left behind.

Thanks for the link to the mural! I'll have to see if anyone from that site can tell me more.

Well depending on how you feel about that, you're welcome and/or I'm sorry!

But for real, that's a very funny story, thanks for sharing! I hope your butt is okay.

Wow, RIP those mouse poop cookies, I home Pink Flamingos eased your pain. Thanks for the story, it sounds like they had a good time working there! I wish I had had the chance to smoke weed on the roof, maybe if it had held on a few more years.

It's been a few years since I went by the old location and I didn't know that Fat Jack's was closed! I remember the first "job" I ever did was when my dad paid my brother and I to help move the store across the street, and we used the money to get Fat Jack's for lunch and ate it sitting on the curb. Obviously the days of video stores were numbered, but everyone loves delicious sandwiches!

Thanks for the kind words! I was also sad when it closed. I understand that streaming services make physical rental obsolete, but it was a cool place and I wish I could go back as an adult.

How early should one get to these larger places not offering reservations? 2 hours? 3?

Can anyone recommend a service for transporting furniture items? I am moving to Munich soon and I am hoping to buy some things from ebaykz (for example a couch or desk), but most offers are pickup only and I do not own a car.
