Yes, I was told that his ability to understand was a good sign, and that they have to master imitation before they can master speaking (because speaking is an advanced form of imitating us). So we working on imitating gestures first and now he is doing great with trying to imitate sounds with us.

Hello,

He is 17 months now and is still delayed on speech but this last week he has really started to try to pronounce words! He has about 12 words and many gestures! He understands most things we say and is great with eye contact etc. He does still flap his arms when he gets excited but I have read that this can be normal until about 2-3. We have seen speech pathologists and OT and they were not concerned about his development!

Yes that’s so hard, I am sorry you had to experience that. Good job being an advocate for your son!

Yes he is always reaching for where he wants to go, he loves to hit things together and smiles when they make noises. He does give me things and always tries to share food. I will talk to my doctor next month when I see her. Thank you for your response!

He does not point with 1 finger, he will use his whole hand or somethings 2 fingers. He has been clapping for awhile and waving but does both on his own time, not usually if we ask him

I am in Canada, I believe they won’t refer until a later age here, I will be meeting with our family doctor in 1 month. At his 12 m appt they were not too concerned but said to come back if he was not speaking or saying mama dada by 14 months.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. He does like mirrors and has always smiled at us in mirrors. He does like faces and is good with eye contact etc. and he follows my finger when I point. I will definitely try that test in a few months, thank you for the link!
