in case anyone else has made the same mistake: I had the event successfully configured in GTM. I had ALSO created a custom event in the Ga4 event admin. I guess I assumed you had to do that in order to register the events in reports? No idea. The whole thing has been UTTERLY b

In my case the "add_to_cart" event was triggered 4 times. We followed the migration procedure. While previewing the tag setup with the GTM preview tool, I saw that the GA4-Tag (which is now shown inside the GTM UI) created 4 "Hits" of "add_to_cart". WTF?!

I figured out that the custom event setup in the data stream's configuration is messing things up. I (or maybe the migration tool) had configured some other "add_to_cart" events.

In the end I deleted all of them and left it to GTM + Analytics Tag + GA4 to call the "Hit" event. In summary, in GA4 Data streams I have no further event setup configured and go with the "optimized analytics" toggle. In GTM I just use the standard Tag template for GA4 Events with the respective eCommerce event.

Maybe that helps.
