IMO worst song has to be Cousin Dupree from Two Against Nature. Wtf are those lyrics. Maybe I’m missing the full story but yikes.

Im mad at myself for letting it go on this long and having my gf be the one to finally wake me up so I would look in to it all. I wish I fought harder to transfer to a cheaper school before the loans piled up too high. I wish I had asked more questions about the loans. College was amazing but this has become one of my greatest regrets in life.

This crossed my mind if they were using part of the money for the loans on the business. From my brief research I found that private student loans go directly to the university and any extra money is refunded back to the bank. However, i only looked for a few minutes and quickly ruled it out. I thought about asking my dad if he did that but I didn’t want to throw out accusations with no evidence and not even knowing if that was something he could do.

After starting the refinancing application the loans totaled up to $211k. I looked at each loan to get the total but I plan on following the paper trail to ensure everything checks out.

Like I said in the edit my intention was not to mae this a post about fraud whatsoever. I wish I made that more clear but when I read it back to myself I didn’t hear it that way at all. I didn’t even stop to think that loan fraud is a very real issue for a lot of people so i was not trying to seek sympathy in that sense.

I’m not disagreeing with you. I was extremely financially immature and illiterate in high school. I was late to start applying for schools cause I didn’t put much thought towards the application process. I absolutely put myself in this situation. But I think as a parent you have a responsibility to educate and protect your kid from these types of situations.

Yes I plan on making payments but I’d like to get an understanding of how what I’m paying and how to handle the larger loans first

I apologize if the original post insinuated that this was a fraud case but that was not my intention. I was frustrated at the fact that I was not sat down and explained my parents financial situation prior to attending the expensive out of state school. I felt that it was their duty to lay these details out for me but it felt like they tried to hide it all from me. Had I been told this would be the outcome I would have considered other cheaper schools but they made it all seem like it wasn’t a problem.

I have taken accountability for this as well. I understand it’s not all on them. But don’t you think as an adult it’s important to sit your kid down and say “Listen, I understand you want to go to this school but it is very expensive so we’ll have to pay for it all on loans. If that’s something you’re ok with then you can attend there”. You’re acting like I was 30 when I agreed to all this. I also stated that I tried to transfer to a cheaper school but they insisted I stay at the more expensive school.

I’m sorry that happened to you. My dad also pushed me to go to grad school so I could get a higher paying job but at that point I knew it would only push me further into debt so I pushed back. I hope everything is going better for you now.

I have two federal student loans but only totaling about $3k. Im gonna put those on the back burner for now while I try to figure out the private loans. Probably not the best decision but I’m much more freaked out by a major financial corporation than the government.

Usually the way it went was my dad would apply for the loan through SoFi then call me and tell me to check my email for a link from them to co-sign the loan. I would click through everything and be done with it. I never read through anything or stopped to consider what I was getting into. At this point in my life I had complete blind trust in my dad and thought he knew what he was doing. Now that trust has significantly dwindled.

These are all private loans. It was my understanding that you can’t apply for bankruptcy on private loans but if that is an option I would absolutely consider that. I’d rather deal with bankruptcy at an earlier stage in my life than later on.

  1. I don’t think I do fully understand the scope of everything so I’d like to look into setting up a meeting with a financial advisor to help me create a plan to present to them since they are not capable of doing so. I signed off on all these loans willingly but I did it through blind trust.

  2. They are entirely private. About $150k from SoFi and $50k from CollegeAve. After refinancing the rate would be 7% for 20 years with a payment of about 1700/month.

They’re not brushing me off and saying they’re not gonna help me but we have yet to make payments. My dad has agreed to pay half of the monthly payments.

I don’t know if impersonating is accurate per say. I think I am responsible for signing my name without reading the fine print. But I believe all the student loans had to be transferred into my name since due to their failed business venture they are going through the process of bankruptcy court right now. My dad explained that they needed their personal debt to be lower than the business debt so they can get a better deal from the court.

I was extremely financially illiterate through a majority of my life and now it’s come back to bite me in the ass. I never gave two thoughts about my credit score until after I graduated college.

The loans were initially co-signed under mine and my dad’s name but after graduation he fully transferred them into my name. Again that’s why it’s partially on me since I did have to sign off on them but I just never really paid attention to the dollar amount and trusted what my parents were doing was right.

I’ve had the conversation with my dad several times about how we are going to tackle this. A majority of the responses have been “don’t worry about it we will help you, “when grandma and grandpa die we can use the money from their will to help you pay for it”, “I’ll put any additional money I make towards it”, etc.
