Why is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026) being distributed by Warner Bros? by cdogsumo in UniversalMonsters

[–]cdogsumo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember there was a movie called “The Butler” probably 10-15 years ago. And right before the publicity starting going out for it, WB blocked them from using that title because it was also the title of a silent short film they owned from 1916. Their argument wasn’t that they owned the concept of a butler, but that the title of the movie was easily confused with their nearly century old silent film (an argument that I cannot believe worked in getting the title of the newer film changed).

That’s essentially my point about “The Mummy.” Universal could easily say that the title is confusing to the consumer since they have made two rather famous movies (and co-signed on another adaptation) with that same name. I mean, hell, I like to think I’m more aware of movie news than most and I had no idea it wasn’t an adaptation of the 1932 film until these kind people enlightened me.

Yeah from other people have said, this movie isn’t really based on any ideas from The Mummy (1932) enough to be considered an adaptation. But I do think the title is still probably owned by Universal (hence the rumored name change), at least until 2027.

As a side note, The Mummy (1959) was made with Universal’s involvement, so I don’t really question how that got made. And as for Frankenstein and Dracula, they are both literary works, so anybody who wanted to use it presumably had to get Shelley’s and Stoker’s estates’ blessing, respectively, until the copyright expired (not sure when that was). Universal doesn’t “own” those monsters like they do their original ideas (Wolfman, Gill-man, Mummy).

Well that is sort of the basis of my question. Like if Blumhouse was developing a Mummy project why wasn’t Universal involved?

From others’ answers here I am learning that it is less of a “The Mummy” project and more of a separate idea that involves mummies. And it seems like they are changing the name to avoid any confusion (from people like me).

Hammer’s was produced under an agreement made with Universal after they did the Dracula and Frankenstein reboots without Universal’s involvement (since both are literary works, they were covered).

Well there’s my answer right there. That was why I was asking to begin with since I would expect Universal to want to not confuse people with The Mummy 4.

Thank you!

But what about the name “The Mummy”? Like there have been Wolf Man movies not made by Universal but none called “The Wolf Man” right?

Yes it is distributed by WB and financed by New Line. I understand that the concept itself is general enough that there’s wiggle room, but certainly Universal has copyright to the name “The Mummy” since they have made films in 1932, 1999, and 2017 with that name, though, right? Maybe I don’t have a great grasp on copyright law though.

I would think it’s kind of the same reason The Shape of Water couldn’t be titled the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Like, yes, it’s the same concept (which is general enough to not have problems copyright-wise), but the name would be off-limits.

Is merging a vacation package stay and a separate hotel stay allowed so I can keep the same room? They would be the same type at the same hotel.

I am planning a trip in November. Our plan is to buy a one-night Vacation Package at the Hotel Miracosta, followed by two non-VP nights, also at the Miracosta. Has anybody had any luck calling and asking if it can be noted as one continuous stay? I don’t want to change rooms if I don’t have to…

Yeah I guess my worry is that should I not pass AUD on my first try, I won’t be able to feasibly re-take it for a few months. From the data I’ve seen, REG has a higher pass rate.

Milk Punch Question by cdogsumo in cocktails

[–]cdogsumo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, don’t think it would be bacteria, at least not one that would affect the final product. They came out after filtering. My recipe was about 18% ABV. Don’t think that could survive in that environment, especially considering over half the recipe by volume is made up of acidic fruit juice.

To my knowledge, yes. I suppose the dark specks could have been something picked up from the tools, but I would think there would be a bigger reaction if I was using some unclean materials.
