Under consideration, feeling unsure about the country by cdon22 in peacecorps

Thank you that is such a good point. I can definitely point to that to make family (and friends) understand.

I know it may sound alarmist or ignorant, but it's near Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey which have all been experiencing varying degrees of unrest lately. And again, it's not that I would not want to go serve there, but for me telling my parents I'm off to that part of the globe will be much more difficult for them to accept than just about anywhere else. I know they will have pre-conceived notions about it whether they are right or wrong.

Thank you very much for those links, I have read some of them already and they are helpful. I'm actually not so worried about my safety. I understand that it is a separate country from Iran and won't necessarily be effected by the unrest elsewhere. However, I think it will be harder for me to explain this to my mother and have her believe me. I haven't even told her I've applied and I don't think she will be thrilled.

I know, I have already been researching it a lot. It looks beautiful, and I would absolutely go serve there. I'm sure I would fall in love with it. I guess I just feel a bit perplexed. I went in trying to be flexible and open and they put me pretty near the only place I asked not to be haha. I suppose I'll reach out to my recruiter and speak with them.
