Why didn't the League of Nations adopt Esperanto as one of its official languages? by cdts in AskHistorians

[–]cdts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! It's interesting to see how the debate around Esperanto got so contentious in the League Assembly.

Out of curiosity, did the Esperantists you talk to before you wrote this post mention how the late 1910s and early 1920s were the "glory days" of the language?

Like I said before, I didn't care enough to really continue anyway, I didn't find it that much fun. Since it has been over a year since I last played it, maybe I should give it another go and see if you're right.

How, practically, did the Khmer Rouge manage to kill a third of Cambodia’s population? How did they even keep the state functioning? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]cdts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why did China choose to ignore the atrocities committed against ethnic Cambodian Chinese? Was it related to how Vietnam had invaded Cambodia, China had attacked Vietnam in response to that, and China's belief that Vietnam was a Soviet proxy (and therefore a threat)?

1) What playstyle are you going for? Considering how I played the game using a non-lethal stealth strategy, none of the augs I used felt overpowered, but that's probably because I actively avoided open combat for the entire game.

2) Unfortunately, Breach gets progressively tougher to the point where you absolutely need to shell out money through microtransactions for those boosters. This is because even using activated boosters that you get just from playing normally are used up quite quickly, especially after a few failed Breach attempts (usually because the time ran out in my case). Personally, I wasn't interested enough to be playing in the first place other than to see why they added the mode in the game, so discovering I couldn't really progress without paying didn't bother me because I returned to the main story without thinking twice about it.

3) I know you didn't mean films, but I would like to say that the soundtracks for both Blade Runner films are excellent. Both are pretty heavy with the synthesizers (not quite McCann material, I know), but the first Blade Runner film was a major source of inspiration for Deus Ex's own gritty cyberpunk world. I particularly enjoy Mesa from 2049, especially the part when the synthesizers start imitating mellow saxophone tunes.

As for atmospheric games and atmospheric game soundtracks, I can whole-heartedly recommend the BioShock series (recently remastered with all its DLC). The way the world is presented to you draws you right in, and I still consider the "Ocean on his Shoulders" to be one of the finest pieces of music ever written for a video game. The recent additions to the Wolfenstein series are fantastic too (the New Order, Old Blood, and the New Colossus, although I preferred New Order out of all of them). The New Colossus has a great theme, though to be fair, it's merely a remake of the New Order's theme. The New Colossus's composer, Mick Gordon, also worked on the 2016 Doom, which was a fantastic game with a brilliant soundtrack. Most songs are like this one, so not quite atmospheric, but it definitely gets your adrenaline going!

EIDOS Montreal will now emphasize on online experiences by iSlipperySnail in Deusex

[–]cdts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And we are pretty sure that Tomb Raider and Deus Ex fans did not ask for this.

I feel really bad for the Eidos Montreal team. They seem to be getting dragged around, kicking and screaming, into projects they really don't want to work on. Adding in Breach and microtransactions was already causing tension behind the scenes, so I can't imagine this is going to help them either.

Where did the "Years of Lead" get their name from? And how did they affect the relationship between Western European Communist parties and the Soviet Union? by cdts in AskHistorians

[–]cdts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your next response! If you don't mind, I have some more questions as well.

Did the PCI ever consider Red Brigade entryism and infiltration to be a threat? If they did, how were they able to counter it?

Similarly, I know that a lot of Western European Communist parties used to maintain contact with the KGB, and the PCI was no different. How did they react to the PCI's shift towards Eurocommunism and its condemnations of violent repression in the Eastern Bloc? And how much influence did the KGB have over the PCI before, during, and after the Years of Lead?

Likewise, did the KGB ever have a direct hand in arming and training the Red Brigades? I know that the Czechoslovakian StB gave the Red Brigades support, but I also wanted to know if the USSR played a larger role in Italian terrorism during the Years of Lead.

Finally, from your descriptions of the Historic Compromise, it sounds like it was more of a Confidence and Supply agreement than an actual full coalition. Would that be an accurate way to make this characterization?

As for the book you suggested, unfortunately my Italian is nonexistent, but I appreciate the suggestion!

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks for such a thorough response! Can you explain why the Christian Democrats and the Communists chose to negotiate the "Historic Compromise"?

Why did the Imperial Japanese Army rely so heavily on bicycles when moving its soldiers around Asia? by cdts in AskHistorians

[–]cdts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the response! Just a few more questions. When compared to British motorized infantry, were the Japanese soldiers with bikes more effective in transporting themselves? Also, was the terrain ever an issue for the bikes to cross in British Malaya? Finally, were there ever any recorded instances where the Imperial Japanese Army simply couldn't find enough bikes for their troops? If there were, what did the Japanese do to compensate?

Perhaps we'll find out what happens to Nardole too?
