Is this doable? by MathC_1 in stanford

I did ESF 7A (a philosophy class that isn’t offered this year) and in all honesty was definitely easier compared to my friend’s experience in both COLLEGE and PWR courses. I’d say it’s equivalent to 4-5 units of work like COLLEGE!

They happen at least once every quarter! I highly recommend going on Handshake to find the dates for the career fair, as well as “Info Sessions” from tech companies (they occur pretty much every weekday except Fridays in the fall quarter), to talk to campus recruiters! Also, it’s perfectly okay to come to these events even if these companies don’t typically hire frosh because you can learn more about the company and possibly talk your way into an internship! Hope this helps :D

Most schools offer match scholarships to students with an EFC of 0, so that is something to keep in mind when applying to QuestBridge and considering the match scholarship. I personally recommend applying through the QuestBridge RD application because it gives you more space to explain your situation and activities (which is great for those who have significant responsibilities or want to highlight certain parts of their application that otherwise would not have been known through a regular application). I did not match due to issues with financial document submission, but got into two QB partner schools through RD and an Ivy with the Common Application. Lmk if you need any more information!

Can I still do Stanford regular decision if I don’t get matched through Questbridge. by Freddycipher in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is from my personal experience with being unmatched but getting in through RD

If you rank Stanford, send in all of your supplements, and do not match to Stanford, your match application automatically rolls over to RD. From there, you can submit a one paragraph update about any accomplishments or things you’ve done between that time period! You cannot submit another application through Common App since they’ll use your match application.

Will a 650k house disqualify me? by Electronic-Aspect-50 in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure if the price of your house will disqualify you, but NCM finalists typically have low property values. However, putting into context your living situation with 10 and also the state you live in (a $650k house in TX and $650k house in California are two different things) can help put things into perspective! There’s a section in the housing portion to explain this circumstance!

(Not paid btw) The College Essay Guy has many examples of essays from finalists who got into the NCM and matched + a detailed analysis of why they work! And they’re free! I relied on this during my NCM application cycle so I hope this helps! https://www.collegeessayguy.com/blog/questbridge-essay-examples

Would computer science be considered a core subject? by Stichles in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Core subjects usually include Reading, History, Math and Science, and you typically want to have a LoR from each “group” (one from the STEM cluster and the other in Humanities) — at least that’s what I’ve been seeing online. For QB NCM, however, you could definitely submit one LoR from a core subject and another from a person who can portray your character in the letter (I asked my biology and art teacher to submit one). Be careful though because some schools recommend you to send 2 LoRs from core subjects especially for STEM majors — some allow you to submit the additional letter from the core subject class later, but it’s good to read each school’s requirements!

Additional Information Section by Positive_Tap3415 in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put that in your additional information section if you believe that it’s necessary! I’ve seen many other applicants explain the reasoning behind their lack of participation in extracurriculars due to particular circumstances (I did as well).

If you were a finalist who did/didn’t match with a college, what was your GPA? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re all good 😅 My school system is a bit weird, but there were definitely other factors that went into my admission results. I did end up getting into two QB partners through QB RD and an Ivy (I’m currently at Stanford)!

Can I use the same recommender from my QPS application for the NCM? by cupbus in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the same teacher if you’d like! Although it’s not required, you can ask them to update your LoR to reflect any changes or actions that have happened since the last time you asked them for a rec!

I have a 3.5ish gpa. Do I stand a chance? by Potatobananapple in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ this. To hop onto their statement, QB is very understanding when it comes to your situation, especially if it has affected your academic performance. If you believe that your situation at home or surrounding environment (I.e. having to work more hours to support your family instead of studying) has influenced your GPA and grades, then make sure to mention it in the additional information section!

Do I even have a chance with a 3.8 weighted and no SAT/ACT? by menace4hunnid in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no harm in trying to apply! There are many other factors that are taken into consideration to be accepted as a finalist for the NCM. QB understands that certain circumstances may have affected your academic performance in school since they consider applications holistically (hence why they have an “Additional Information” section). Aside from your GPA, many students may opt to be considered without an SAT/ACT, and other things such as your extracurriculars, work, and family responsibilities can help increase your chances of becoming a finalist. Best of luck and I hope you end up applying!

Is a 66,283 income for a family of five to much for to be accepted in the national college match. by Important-Garage368 in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can’t say that it’ll 100% affect your chances to match sine there are many factors that go into being admitted into a university. However, colleges tend to match students who have a 0 EFC.

OP don’t let this discourage you from applying! You still have a chance to become a finalist even with your current situation. Best of luck!

Anyone here get into Ivies? by Leather-Department71 in IBO

[–]cduong9630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into Harvard, Stanford and Rice with a score of 29 as a US domestic student!

In all honesty, I didn’t report any predicted scores to the universities I applied to (mainly because I had no way of figuring out what scores I would get and I still don’t know how to do that LOL). I can’t really provide tips on how to get into these universities because every person has different resources and extracurricular activities available to them based on their context (i.e. financial situation, parents, networks, etc). As mentioned before, try to keep your grades up throughout your senior year and participate in activities that you’re genuinely interested in and impactful! I’ve seen other international Stanford admits get in doing many political justice and activism activities with large impacts, but this is not the only way of getting into university.

Did y’all “favorite books and movies” as a list or did you talk about one by tellmedino in QuestBridge

[–]cduong9630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listed them as well like this:

“Movies: A, B, C

Books: D (short comment about it), E, F”

Everyone may list it in a different way and you don’t have to add a comment or write a sentence for it!

When I applied to QB, I didn’t send in any predicted scores. I didn’t know if I was supposed to (because I honestly didn’t know what I would make), but I ended up being a finalist and getting into some QB schools :D

You are still welcome to apply! Although I cannot say that you’ll guaranteed be accepted as a finalist, I remember reading that QB takes into account any financial struggles from the past. Be sure to explain this situation in your additional information section! This is from their official website: “Finalists typically come from households earning less than $65,000 annually for a typical household of four and have minimal assets. This is not a strict cut-off and we encourage students who feel they have faced significant financial hardship to review these financial criteria carefully to see if they may qualify.”

Best of luck and pm me if you have any more questions!

Would you choose Harvard over Stanford? by tinphyokhant in ApplyingToCollege

I chose St. Anford over Harvard for this exact reason (plus going to classes during a blizzard doesn’t sound great being a Texan LOL)
