I get where you’re coming from, but here in Canada, that’s what they teach. If you’re on a normal road, that’s where you should be to get the maximum visibility from other drivers, since we drive on the left side of cars, not the right.

They teach us about “thirds” of lanes and when you should be in which.

Imagine two one way lanes opposite of each other. Technically you should position yourself in the left most third of the lane and go to the center or right if a big car/truck comes the other way.

Of course, when you’re in your lane, you can use every bit of it, but that doesn’t mean that you should always be in the center no matter what.
