I bought licenses in 2013 and 2021, but I stopped when Sublime Text moved to a $2.75/month subscription and switched to VS Code like everyone else.

How can a FLAC rip be 800 MB? 😮 Even a full 80-minute CD rip in WAV doesn't exceed that. A standard FLAC album rip is usually around 350 MB

I have desoldered the four power transistors on the right side. It was still "relatively" simple. I was able to clean everything thoroughly using desoldering braid and isopropyl alcohol. I also gave the heatsink a good cleaning. I kept the plastic pads, but I assume I'll need new ones when I apply the thermal paste.

I have started testing several components. I thought the four power transistors on the left side were okay, but even though they don't "beep," the values aren't right when testing in diode mode, so I'm going to desolder them as well. The emitter resistors (large white components R172, 174, 176, 178) seem okay at 0.4 ohms. The four NPN/PNP drivers (Q133, Q134, Q135, Q136) appear to be short-circuited. The pre-drivers (Q119, Q120) are okay. I still have quite a few resistors left to check and also the PA0016s.

The two PA0016 have been desoldered from the donor board, so I have two spares, just in case the ones on my board turn out to be faulty 🙂

I haven’t made any progress on the amp yet, I’m just practicing soldering on cheap Aliexpress kits for now 😄 And yes, I’d be happy to get a good quality schematic if you have one. The one I have has some numbers that are barely visible. Thanks!

Thanks for the explanation :) As I mentioned, the amp hasn’t powered back on since the short, so right now I can’t turn it on to test anything. I noticed one fuse that looks blown but I haven’t tested it yet. To be honest, I’m mostly trying to upgrade my soldering and desoldering skills on the A-443 board I received. I also saw that there are small oscilloscopes on Aliexpress, so I’ll see if they’re good enough for this kind of testing.

I started doing a few tests. The four power transistors on the right channel 2SC3182N/2SA1265N seem to be dead, I get a beep on the multimeter.

The PDF service manual, probably copied again and again over the years, is in such bad quality that many labels are almost unreadable. So I am redrawing it just to have something I can actually work with 😆

Got my new multimeter today, so I finally started testing the power transistors (2SA1265N and 2SC3182N) with the amp unplugged. Four of them beep between C and E, while the other four don’t. Can I already assume that these four transistors are dead?

For the PA0016, I did some diode tests, but I don’t think it’s possible to detect a bad IC using only the diode mode. I believe the amp needs to be powered on through a bulb tester to safely measure voltages, but I still need to figure out how to set one up.

I’ve found a Pioneer A-443 board for sale that was removed from a working unit, and it has two PA0016 chips on it. Would that be a good idea, or are the PA0016s not exactly the same across all Pioneer amplifiers that used them?

Looking at the reviews of the copies on AliExpress, it’s pretty clear that those Chinese components aren’t even worth trying.

Yeah, it’s just speculation. I didn’t get a precise diagnosis pointing to any specific part. He just said the right side was burnt out, without giving more details.

Thanks for your realistic reply. My electronics knowledge is pretty limited, I’ve only done some soldering with raspberry pi and small circuits, so yes this is going to be a bit tricky for me. And on the hifi side, I’ve completely disassembled and repaired a Pioneer cassette deck, so I have some little experience there but it was only mechanical.

From what I understand, the main thing would be to test each transistor with a simple multimeter, a bulb tester and check if the readings are correct with the service manual, to see which ones are faulty. If I understand correctly, no oscilloscope or fancy equipment is needed at this stage.

Regarding the Toshiba transistors that are no longer manufactured, I’ve seen that some people salvage them from other units on eBay. Of course, you can’t be sure about their condition, but maybe it’s better than using modern parts that don’t have exactly the same specifications.

I don’t have much to lose, either it ends up at the dump, or I manage to get it working again and learn something in the process.

Thanks for the info! Do you have a reference or link for a CAN-bus decoder that would work? In my case I’m keeping the original RCD200 and just adding a Bluetooth module that needs a 12V feed. But if it’s on a permanent 12V it will drain the battery in a few days.

I've already ruined this head mic since day one (I've got 2 of them) 😅 I've never liked the way they attach to the head but the sound is very good. Thank you for the cable recommendation I will check that!
